Editorial reviews

Editors Select, October 2013 - Speculative fiction has emerged as the most popular subgenre of YA literature in the last decade or so, helping to patently defeat the dire predictions that kids these days just wouldn't care about books. Veronica Roth's Divergent trilogy has become an almost iconic addition to this cannon. Insurgent, Book Two in the series, ended with an M. Night Shyamalan-worthy twist that has kept me and the other fans here at Audible biting our nails - making the arrival of Allegiant all the more exciting. Luckily, Emma Galvin, probably the best YA voice talent going today, returns to narrate along with a surprise male co-narrator chosen by a fan-vote. I hate to state the obvious but if you were sucked in by The Hunger Games series (and come on you know you were) then you need to check out Divergent. And to top things off, it's about to be a blockbuster movie. Emily, Audible Editor

absolutely love, will listen to again

I absolutely loved this book. The narrators are amazing. They kept the book worth listening to all the way to the end by how they changed their voice for different characters. Even though near the end is sad for me, I will definitely listen to this book again

Wtf

Why the frick did tris die, she didn’t need to. She didn’t have to. And how come she survived in the movie, and not the books? The ending of this book sucks. Sucks. Sucks. But, overall it’s an okay series and whatever.

It's not the reason you think.

Would you listen to Allegiant again? Why?

No. It feels like the writing was rushed to make a deadline.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Tris. She such a badass.

Which character – as performed by Emma Galvin and Aaron Stanford – was your favorite?

Tris.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

It's not as boring as the book. Please?

Any additional comments?

It drags too much from the start. I have no problem with the ending.

Very well written!

Although the ending is pretty sad, the story was so well described that it displayed intricate pictures, in my mind, describing the story that no movie can emulate.

Rushed but okay.

Would you try another book from Veronica Roth and/or Emma Galvin and Aaron Stanford ?

I would try another book by Veronica. While I wasn't thrilled with Allegiant I enjoyed the first two in the series. Emma Galvin is easy to listen to so I would be happy to listen to another performance by her, I was indifferent to Aaron Stanford.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

I liked hearing more about what was outside the experiment, but unfortunately I felt the overall story was rushed and too much was crammed into the book without giving the events the level of detail they deserved. The reader was introduced to a character or a plot just to have it's relevance cut short.

Which character – as performed by Emma Galvin and Aaron Stanford – was your favorite?

I enjoyed Emma's portrayal of a majority of the characters. Aaron wasn't terrible, but as someone else noted in a different review, his portrayal of female characters wasn't the greatest. His inflection with female characters occasionally made them sound more juvenile that I imagined them to be.

Do you think Allegiant needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

No, certainly not a follow up. But I would have liked the author to have taken more time with this one.

Any additional comments?

There were a number of reviews that said to not even bother with this book because it was a disappointment to the series, and while I don't completely disagree I also couldn't not finish the series. While I wasn't blown away it wasn't terrible.

Almost sad the trilogy is over!

Would you listen to Allegiant again? Why?

Yes! Emma Galvin's narration brings the characters alive in such a way that you feel their strength and insecurity. This is a fantastic series with characters that you want to believe in.

What did you like best about this story?

Triss and Four have a complicated relationship that never feels too romantic (thankfully), but exemplifies that all relationships must endure great challenges to succeed.

What does Emma Galvin and Aaron Stanford bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The difference between their voices and the words on the page is like the difference between watching a full screen HD 1080p, surround size version of a show v. a black and white tube tv on mute. Kudos for "being" these characters!

What Happened?

Could you see Allegiant being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

It's funny because after I finished Aliegent. I was thinking they probably should have waited until the first movie came before releasing the book. I was super excited about the movie and now after the last book, I my enthusiasm has definately diminished.

Any additional comments?

I really enjoyed the first two books and suggested them to friends but this last book just should have been so much better. I listened to the first books and could not stop listening. This one I kept starting and stopping and starting because it just didn't keep me engaged. I also felt like the pacing was bad sometimes it seemed to be slow and other times things felt rushed. The end was just ............. there. You have this emotional climax (which was rushed but I must admit mad me cry) and then several chapters of clean up and then just ....nothing. All I can say is I was very disappointed.

Not a perfect finale

Although the story has received some negative reviews, I thought the author uniquely addressed the challenge of ending the trilogy with a realistic twist. Death during revolution and uprising should be an obvious piece of the storyline, and this novel follows that philosophy. I feel the characters exhibited realistic reactions and the author artfully crafted a scenarios to portray growth, overcoming obstacles and the power of a biological and support family.
