Publisher's Summary

Before she went to join Sam and Mogget downstairs, Lirael paused for a moment to look at herself in the tall silver mirror that hung on the wall of her room. The image that faced her bore little resemblance to the Second Assistant Librarian of the Clayr. She saw a warlike and grim young woman, dark hair bound back with a silver cord rather than hanging free to disguise her face. She no longer wore her librarian's waistcoat, and she had a long Nehima at her side rather than a library-issue dagger. But she had kept her library whistle, tucking it into the small pouch at her belt. Though she was many, many leagues from any help the whistle might summon, she felt the need to cling to some small part of her past and her identity.

She had become an Abhorsen, Lirael thought, at least on the outside.

Don't miss books one and two of this trilogy! Sabriel and Lirael: Daughter of the Clayr.

What the Critics Say

"Abhorsen is an excellent denouement for a fantasy that is both literary and popularly accessible. Out loud, the powers of this future classic are intensified, especially through Curry's inspired dramatization." (School Library Journal)
"At once an allegory regarding war and peace and a testament to friendship, this thought-provoking fantasy also resolves the true identities of the popular Dog and Mogget characters and suggests that Nix may still have more tricks up his sleeve." (Publishers Weekly)

I love the Abhorsen series, but this is the one that brought me to grown man tears. No spoilers from me but..Kibeth & Yrael made me weep. Tim Curry never disappoints, just an excellent narrator.

    "great book, great narrator"
    Any additional comments?

This was a great book. The pace was great, Tim Curry did an outstanding job. He created an atmosphere that was eerie and fun to listen to in the dark of the car. My wife and I listened to this on a trip and the hours flew by. Everything about it was an excellent listen. We recommended it to our grandchildren who also loved it.This will be a family favorite. Being careful what our grandchildren listen to we found nothing objectionable in this one.

    "An Incredible Listen"

This book is beautifully written, as is always the case with Garth Nix. I did not expect to find an audio version which even began to portray the beauty and depth of his world, but Tim Curry was definitely the right person to chose to do so. If you've read the series, or are simply looking to find out if it's any good, I would definitely suggest listening to this.

Brilliant climax to a superb trilogy. Moves from the Sameth/Lirael 'discovering their identities' phase to riveting action. Brilliantly read, and wonderful characters. The Disreputable Dog and Mogget are witty and intelligent additions to the blossoming pair of Sameth and Lirael, for whom you find yourself rooting for more and more as the tension mounts. A great pity it had to end.

"As good as I remembered "

It's been a few years since I last read the Old Kingdom trilogy, and this is the first time I have listened to the audio book versions. I loved it. Tim Curry really brings the books to life. None of my usual grumbles that the narrator can't pronounce simple words, never mind the more obscure stuff fantasy demands. I just hope the narrators for books 4&5 are as good!

Thank you Tim Curry for my journey through the Old Kingdom series. You made me feel every emotion the characters felt. I could vividly imagine the characters and the world they lived in. You've have done this series justice! You've led the characters with their accents and tonal sounds through the entire series without once changing the way they sound!

"An epic conclusion to an epic trilogy"

I've just finished listening to a story I've read several times, and I'm sure I will read again. A fantastic end to a wonderful story, Tim Curry's work is perfect here, and finally getting big answers will please those for whom this is a new tale. Both Mogget and the Disreputable Dog are wonderful creations and the chapter under the house is genuinely frightening.

I'm sad that I've reached the end in all honesty. Great stuff.

Garth nix is one of my favourite authors so I am a little biased. me and my partner decided to read to each other every night so we could enjoy the same books together. I chose the old Kingdom series as i had read them when younger and love the story's. we read sabriel and lireal but when it came to abhorsen decided to try listening to the audiobook. Tim curry brings the characters to life in ways neither of us could and makes the experience even more enjoyable.

I would highly recommend the series to anyone loved every second of it.
