In the late 19th century, a group of travelers become marooned in the coastal jungles of equatorial Africa. Among the group, John and Alice Clayton give birth to a boy, but soon misfortune strikes and both parents sadly die. A she-ape named Kala adopts the young orphaned boy and names him Tarzan. Thus is born the beginning of the Tarzan legacy!

Better than expected

Being a little TOO informed of the character by TV and film (and not being a huge fan of those), I must say that I was pleasantly surprised by this book, since it's the first time for me visiting the source material. But as fan of classic pulp, esp the R.E.H. Conan stuff as well as the Barsoom series, I felt I'd put off checking this out for far too long. Granted, it's far from perfect, considering the time in which it was written, some of the racial stuff made me wince a little bit, the characterizations of supporting cast (esp Jane's father) seemed flat and mildly annoying, and while the narration overall is excellent, some of Ben Dooley's voicing of the female characters made my skin crawl a bit. However, those issues aside, Tarzan is a more thoughtful and interesting character than I've ever seen him depicted on screen, and is set in a more interesting overall story than I had expected. I think it bears another mention b/c of my earlier criticism, Mr Dooley really does a terrific job all throughout, the recording quality is high overall, it's only his portrayal of feminine characters that didn't hit properly for me. That said, I look forward to trying out more in this series.
