Publisher's Summary

Ria and Marilyn have never met - they live thousands of miles apart, separated by the Atlantic Ocean: one in a big, warm, Victorian house in Tara Road, Dublin, the other in a modern, open-plan house in New England.

Two more unlikely friends would be hard to find: Ria's life revolves around her family and friends, while Marilyn's reserve is born of grief. But when each needs a place to escape to, a house exchange seems the ideal solution.

Along with the borrowed houses come neighbours and friends, gossip and speculation as Ria and Marilyn swap lives for the summer....

Gossip

Just about life in what feels like a small village. It is just full of gossip. It is enjoyable enough but not a page turner by any stretch of imagination. The characters are well developed and you feel as if you really meet and know them.

quietly absorbing

I was after an aga-saga and came here guided by Maeve Binchy's sales figures- a writer who sells that many copies must be doing something right.

And she does... It's not the plot, which is interesting enough, not the characters, who are not very memorable- the charm lies in the narration- as it so often does with Antony Trollope (though in a different way) One has the feeling that here is a very sensible writer; that one can trust her to steer you through the novel and out again at the other end.... and, as with Trollope, you have to be prepared to take your time...

The publisher's notes on Audible give very little away- really house-swapping only occupies about the last 3rd of the book- and by that time the bulk of the plot is more-or-less all over, bar the shouting- It's basically a tale of middle-class Dublin life and love.

An extra 'edge' is given to the story in that a pall of nostalgia hangs over it- it's a very nineties tale of Dublin in the boom times.

It's beautifully narrated- I went on to have a bit of a craze for Kate Binchy reading Maeve Binchy.

Useful fact- 'Tara Road' was the first book to have a print run of a million copies prior to publication.

wonderful transport

I listened to this book after nearly a year of pandemic circumstances and partway through our second lockdown. The skillful narration and wonderfully populated story transported me into a community full of interesting and relatable characters. I will miss them and will begin my search for a new MB community to continue to keep loneliness at bay.

What a wonderfully read, warm book.

I absolutely adored this audio book. Kate Binchy told the story so well that I didn't want it to end. I purchased it as my holiday read and looked forward to my sessions with Kate Binchy everyday on the beach. The story flows perfectly with warm lovable characters throughout and Kate Binchys story telling is magical, she really brings the characters to life. I believe that even a wonderful story can so easily be completely ruined by a terrible narrator, but the combination of a great book and a fantastic narrator in Tara Road made this the most enjoyable book I've listened to in a very long time. I am already searching for my next Maeve Binchy/Kate Binchy collaboration and look forward to sitting back and enjoying it.

Fell in love!

Great characters, a story of love & life, ups & downs. Perfect escapism to family life in Ireland in the 90s.

My first experience of this author and narrator

Unassuming, unpretentious, intriguing characters. Wonderfully Irish with a smattering of American and "Internationally Recognised Drug Barons". The narrator aligned well with the author's presentation. I will certainly attempt to listen to another book!

Why all the pauses ?

The production seemed a bit sloppy with loads of gaps between narration. It would be more understandable between chapters but it was very random. Shame as Kate Binchys narration is top class

A story to warm the heart

I loved Tara Road when I was younger and was glad to see that Kate Binchy reads this audiobook. Having lived in Ireland but not being Irish, I was very interested in the accents she gives different characters — I felt it injected a lot more class implications into the story than I had been aware of reading the novel. However, this is a warm, engaging reading of one of Maeve Binchy’s best stories, with a varied cast of characters who are exactly like the real Dubliners. If you need a pick-me-up, some easy listening that will carry you along and make you see the good and the true in a world full of sorrow and injustice, you should listen to Tara Road. Enjoy!

Great story but doesn't translate wel to narration

While I love this book I found that the narrated version wasn't as I expected.
