Publisher's Summary

At a very young age, Paul Fisher suffered eye damage in a mysterious accident that he can't remember. But his thick glasses can't keep him from being a great soccer goalie for his middle school team. He is, however, overshadowed by his older brother Erik, a high school football star with an evil temper few people know about.

When a huge sinkhole swallows half his school, Paul enrolls at Tangerine Middle and struggles to fit in. While his brother's football heroics make headlines, Paul simply fights for playing time on the soccer field. But as the year goes on, shocking secrets emerge that change the Fisher family forever.

This remarkable, award-winning book received glowing reviews in numerous publications and landed atop most reading lists. Ramon de Ocampo's skillful narration captures a full cast of diverse and well-developed characters as several gripping plot lines wind toward a startling conclusion.

Critic Reviews

"Told in the first person by Paul, this is a thought-provoking, yet highly readable and entertaining story. Narrator Ramon de Ocampo conveys what it's like to be a teenager, a person with almost no power over his own life, yet full of his own strong beliefs about how things should be. He gives Paul an optimistic voice, making him come across as extremely likable, a person ready to learn and grow from life's experiences." (AudioFile magazine)

"This excellent recording will bring new fans to a book that has become a YA classic." (School Library Journal

Outstanding read

This is the best book I've read. Amazing story, truly an original story. This is a story that deserves more fan base. I'm constantly blown away by how few people have read this. The audio version also very good. You get an image when reading this that a movie could never do justice to. This book made me start loving to read.

Tangerine is an Exceptional Story

Excellent story with high level of interest for teenagers. Strong heroic character must overcome the facades put in place by his family because they refuse to see the truth about his evil older brother. Ironically, the main character is legally blind but sees so much more than those around him who choose to be blind. This story reads almost like a science fiction but is realistic fiction with a very satisfying conclusion.

Required Reading

My sons 7th grade PreAP class will be reading this soon. I was disappointed that they weren't reading The Outsiders like the regular seventh grade classes, because I remembered fondly from my childhood. Still, I thought I'd better check Tangerine out.

Tangerine is great storytelling with excellent themes and I suspect it's characters will be more directly relatable to my suburban teen then with the greasers and socs of the Outsiders. I'm excited to explore these themes with him.

I WANT TO SHARE THIS BOOK WITH ALL MY FRIENDS!!!

What did you love best about Tangerine?

The characters were so well developed. I especially loved Paul, the main character. Paul had quiet insight into himself and those around him. He used clever but not derogative humor to deflect hostile words and to open doors of friendship with those who approached to intimidate him.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Tangerine?

There were memorable moments throughout the entire book. If I were to pick one, it would be Paul's last day, as he was leaving his new school. (No spoilers!)

Have you listened to any of Ramon De Ocampo’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not listened to Ramon De Ocampo before but as soon as this book was finished I looked up his other books so I can listen to more of his narration. I am now his Big Fan!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, but then I was so disappointed that it was over!!!

Any additional comments?

I want to read more about this family!

A Heroes Truth

I had read this book 10 years ago with my 7th grade class; I loved it then and I live it now. It's a great heroes take about courageously doing the right thing. I recommend to any advent readers. It was excellently written and excellently narrated. The narration especially was great. He developed each character which made it easy to follow along and know who was speaking.

Slurpy tale

The story is slow to get moving, but picks up speeds and ends well. The narrator is seriously heavy on spit on always slurpy! His constant lip smacking was beyond annoying and very distracting from the story.
