If you thought magic was confined to one country - think again. Trier: famous for wine, Romans, and being Germany's oldest city. When a man is found dead with his body impossibly covered in a fungal rot, the local authorities know they are out of their depth. But fortunately this is Germany, where there are procedures for everything. Peter Grant is facing fatherhood, and an uncertain future, with equal amounts of panic and enthusiasm. Rather than sit around, he takes a job with émigré Silicon Valley tech genius Terrence Skinner's brand new London start up - the Serious Cybernetics Company. Drawn into the orbit of Old Street's famous "silicon roundabout", Peter must learn how to blend in with people who are both civilians and geekier than he is.

Story
There's something going bump on the Metropolitan line, and Sergeant Jaget Kumar knows exactly whom to call. It's PC Peter Grant's specialty.... Only it's more than going 'bump'. Traumatised travellers have been reporting strange encounters on their morning commute, with strangely dressed people trying to deliver an urgent message. Stranger still, despite calling the police themselves, within a few minutes the commuters have already forgotten the encounter - making the follow-up interviews rather difficult.

Story
The Faceless Man, wanted for multiple counts of murder, fraud, and crimes against humanity, has been unmasked and is on the run. Peter Grant, Detective Constable and apprentice wizard, now plays a key role in an unprecedented joint operation to bring him to justice. But even as the unwieldy might of the Metropolitan Police bears down on its foe, Peter uncovers clues that the Faceless Man, far from being finished, is executing the final stages of a long-term plan. A plan that has its roots in London's 2,000 bloody years of history, and could literally bring the city to its knees.

Welcome to Sunder City. The magic is gone, but the monsters remain. I'm Fetch Phillips, just like it says on the window. There are a few things you should know before you hire me: 1. But after what happened, to the magic, it's not the humans who need my help.

I'll give it shot. Help an old-lady Elf track down her husband's murderer? That's right up my alley. What I don't do, because it's impossible, is search for a way to bring the goddamn magic back.

Where the Marble Arch stands today in London was once the Tyburn gallows - also known as The Hanging Tree. The walk toward those gallows along Oxford Street and past the Mayfair mansions has a bloody and haunted history as the last trip of the condemned. Some things never change. For both blood and ghosts have returned to those mansions of the super-rich. And it's up to Peter Grant - England's last wizard and the Metropolitan Police's reluctant investigator of all things supernatural - to get to the bottom of the sinister doings.

Body and soul. The song. That's what London constable and sorcerer's apprentice Peter Grant first notices when he examines the corpse of Cyrus Wilkins, part-time jazz drummer and full-time accountant, who dropped dead of a heart attack while playing a gig at Soho's 606 Club. The notes of the old jazz standard are rising from the body - a sure sign that something about the man's death was not at all natural but instead supernatural.

My name is Peter Grant, and I am a keeper of the secret flame - whatever that is. Truth be told, there's a lot I still don't know. My superior Nightingale, previously the last of England's wizardly governmental force, is trying to teach me proper schooling for a magician's apprentice. But even he doesn't have all the answers. Mostly I'm just a constable sworn to enforce the Queen’s Peace, with the occasional help from some unusual friends and a well-placed fire blast.

It begins with a dead body at the far end of Baker Street tube station, all that remains of American exchange student James Gallagher - and the victim's wealthy, politically powerful family is understandably eager to get to the bottom of the gruesome murder. The trouble is, the bottom - if it exists at all - is deeper and more unnatural than anyone suspects...except, that is, for London constable and sorcerer's apprentice Peter Grant.

Good Stories, Variable Narration
Hi All would be well if Kobna had narrated it. However he just did a bit and it was mostly others. As such the voices were not the usual characterisations and I didn’t really feel at home. Love you Ben. Stick with Kobna!

Thoroughly enjoyed this
Probably not s good place to start if you've never read the main books, go start with book one and know I'm jealous of your journey into the unknown. Rereading is never quite the same as those first steps. These stories just add so much more to our knowledge and understanding. As I've listened I've gone back immediately and relistened again to be sure I'd got all the hints and nuances. This won't be the last time I listen or read these, next time will be in chronological order, now that will be fun.

A book of two parts most definitely
The first part is the Peter Grant short stories and on the whole are very enjoyable the second part is the others and for me was tedium personified, if I want to listen educated ramblings I generally put on the news not purchase a book, the most annoying factor was the insist of the author to perform the introductions... ye gods man stop please! Stick to novels and don’t do voice work

Lovely little collection of short stories
Read this a few months back when it came out as an ebook and really enjoyed it so reread the audio version. It's a nice collection of short stories and snippets from various books and more across the wider Rivers series. Some of these were previously only available in certain editions of the Rivers books so it was great to finally get them collected like this. The audio version is particularly well done though thanks to the talented cast of narrators.

Not what I expected
For the cost at $14.95 ,this short books I purchased wasnt for me, sadly disappointing. It was like reading Nursery Rhymes ,with no ending . The rest of Bens books have ben more than Fantastic...., 100% Ben. I just find short books annoying . Bens past books had some great story lines with Kobna doing an awesome job with the narrations. Come on Mr Aaronovitch, a lengthy book next time with some of the same characters (maybe introducing a few new characters ) ?
