Publisher's Summary

Army Ranger and Afghanistan war vet Scratch Sullivan has adapted well to the zombie apocalypse. Or as well as can be expected, considering that society has collapsed, the population is decimated, and Scratch hunts monsters for a living. But hey, at least he's still living.

Thing is, Scratch is happy enough with the odd job killing THEM and occasionally shacking up with his on-and-off girlfriend, Kara. But when Scratch is tipped off to a potential undead incursion into the safe zone he protects, he's forced to head straight into the heart of the deadlands to find the truth about the threat he faces.

New favorite series!

Well written well read and the sound defects and music added to the overall experience. The author is extremely well versed in tactics and the warrior mindset is prevalent in his writing style.
The premise and plot is unique, and a welcome change in the zombie genre. Very unique and immersive.
Make more audio books for this series please! Such an amazing experience compared to reading the book!

A little cheesy but interesting

Where the narration and sound effects are a bit cheesy. The story line is pretty interesting and worth your time.

loved the actual book, but there were points where the background noise overpowered the actual story

The sound effects are welcomed

This is not your average zombie apocalyptic series. It is done in a serial type so each chapter is given, one at a time, to entice and pull readers in. That also means that the ending for each chapter is not the ending but normally ends on a cliff hanger, and these do.

The first book has 84 pages. Just enough to wet your whistle and beg for more. The one thing that took me a bit of time to get used to was the narrator's southern drawl. I'm from the south but it took me a minute to get used to S. W. Salzman. After I did though his voice became synonymous with Scratch Sullivan and I was able to really dive into the story.

All four equal a total of 8 hours and it is very worth the time. A bit of a different world for those that enjoy reading zombie books. This story has all sorts of creatures from zombies to vampires and everything in between, making it a world that is even harder to live in. There is also a different take on the zombies. Some can think and talk. That sort of thing freaks me out!

Scratch is a different kind of character but really fun to listen to. And dark!

Interestingly there is quite a bit of military and swat type movements in book one. And fortunately explanations. Although I was in the military many of these were not something I would know off the top of my head. M.D. Massey somehow gets Scratch to explain what he is doing while letting the reader know and still keeping to the story. It also helps the reader understand how he gets through some of the crap he has to go through. I add this because even in an apocalyptic where having and knowing guns is important, I normally do not want to know, however, again, it's peppered throughout the story in such a way as to not overwhelm the reader but also keep it realistic. As realistic as possible for an apocalyptic zombie story.

The audio was just as good as it was in Them Episode 1. The sound effects really add to the drama! He pistol whips (as the author puts it) a zombie and there is an actual crunch added in! It's gross but also so great!

As the episodes progress, I find that I'm liking Scratch more and more. The narration is great and although it took me a minute to get used to the southern drawl, I think Salzman does a great job of voicing Scratch. Couple of new characters in this and he does the female voices just as well as the male. The ending to this one is so great. Scratch is always having to deal with what would otherwise be something a normal person would not want to deal with. I liked the ending to this more than the previous but mainly due to the last line.

I think book two was my favorite so far. Book three seems to be more of a filler and didn't stick with me as much. There is always so much going on that it seems one plot line after another and Scratch still has a ton to deal with. More so than the first two, if that's even possible.

The characters really come out of this one though. The narration is just as good, if not better since I am now completely used to Salzman's narration. The audio is my favorite part with the added in audio production and noises that are seamless with the story. The only downside to the story is that it seems as if Scratch is constantly saving someone. I guess that is the only way to keep part of your humanity in a very inhumane world. That said, the more he goes through, the more character comes out of him.

Once again there was a cliffhanger. I enjoy Scratch's mentality throughout this and even when he is in dire straits, he is laughing. The end of this one is a new one for Scratch though!

Episode four brought together a lot of what started in the first episodes. Scratch never stops dealing with new stuff though. There is a guy in this one with a voice that gives me the creeps! Although this is the end to the first season, this still ends on another cliff hanger. M.D. Massey seems to really like them. Still, the writing is good and the characterization got better throughout the four parts. The plot builds, as you would expect for a series. I started out not liking Scratch much but by episode four I was on the edge of my seat waiting to find out what was going to happen next.

The audio has a lot of different sounds added in, screams and such that really help to pull the reader into the story. I admit to jumping a few times while listening to this one!

What would have made THEM: Incursion better?

The narrator has a great voice. He just needs to slow down his reading
