Publisher's summary

The day her mother passed away, Beulah was only given a name. That was it. No other explanation.

Portia Van Allan was not someone Beulah could believe her mother ever knew. Wealthy, self-absorbed, and other than the fact Portia was supplying special care for Beulah's sister, Portia was cruel.

The day Portia's son returns home for the summer, Beulah discovers that Portia isn't in charge. This isn't her home at all. Her late husband left her with nothing. It all belongs to their son, who doesn't seem to like his mother at all.

Jasper Van Allan doesn't know why his mother has hired a young, gorgeous blonde to take care of the house and almost lets her go before he finds out the truth.

Realizing there's more to Beulah than a stunning face, he keeps finding reasons to be near her all the time. It's all falling into place, it all begins to make sense...until the real lies, the dark secrets, and the skeletons come tumbling out of the Van Allan closet. Twisted truths that will send Beulah running...

Hmm Cliffhanger part 1

Beulah has been shoved into a situation she isn’t completely comfortable with but she puts her big girl panties on and does what needs to be done.

I love that she doesn’t feel sorry for herself she is grateful for what she has in life and even when life is kicking her she thinks of her sister first. She takes care of her sister Heidi who is the light of Beulah's life, she says to herself others have it worse off that she does. She just has to figure things out and make it work and that she does. No woe is me stuff.

Jaspers mother Portia, had me confused why did she help Beulah? Well, when you find out it opens up a can of worms. EEK
I am keeping my thoughts on Jasper ( is a bit of a charmer) and Stone (he acts like an a – s - s) to myself for now. I don't have a lot to say on them as of yet.

Beulah, I felt like she fell in love way too fast, Jasper does something nice for her and she fell in love it was weird. I didn’t feel the chemistry. Even Jasper's (new) feelings feel off.

It kind of reminds me of Blaire and Rush from Abbi’s other series but trying too hard. I don’t know.

It ends on a bit of a cliffy so I will keep going with book two.

The narration: I really enjoyed Samantha Summer’s performance her female voices were spot on and she had the sound of a young woman.
Now don’t get me wrong Kyle Munley’s voice is delicious but he sounds older than I would have thought Jasper was. It threw me off a little. You do get used to it. So not bad just a little odd.

slow start, but a great story

in the beginning I thought this would be a Cinderella story with a wicked step mother but it it was soooo much more. The twist from Portia was completely unexpected too. The narrators brought the characters to life and made things more interesting.

Hired help falls in love with her boss

In Sweet Little Thing we meet Beulah Edwards and Jasper Van Allen. Jasper inherited his fathers company and managed all his finances. Beulah is the hired help in his home. Jasper returned home early to find a new beautiful maid working in his home. His mother Portia hadn’t mentioned hiring someone younger.
Beulah’s more than a stunning face. She’s almost twenty working in the Van Allen’s home. When her mother died she left Heidi in her care. Heidi has Down Syndrome. Beulah couldn’t work and take care of her sister full time, in the letter her mother left, it instructed her to go to Portia, she owed her a favor. Portia placed Heidi in a place for special needs people.
Jasper was home for the summer bringing along his friend Stone. Stone didn’t approve of Beulah. She was the help and people of their status looked down upon the help.
The concept is simple: Beulah wonders how it’s possible that her kind sweet mother knew a woman like Portia. Portia was a cold mean woman.
I felt like I had read this story before. Do you get the feeling you know how the story will turn out before it happens? That’s how I felt. I questioned myself thinking have I read this before? I hadn’t. When the truth was explained all I say was, “I knew it”.
I was once an Abbi Glines fan back when she wrote Fallen Too Far. Since then every time I try to read one of her books I feel like I’ve read it before. Abbi’s writing style and voice doesn’t call to me the way it once did. This book seems far too similar to Fallen Too Far.

Abbi is a detailed writer paying particular attention to minute details of which I could care less about. This read like a daily diary describing each days activities from morning until night. Too many inconsequential words. It was unnecessary to explain every word or action. Let a reader fill in the details themself. Beulah was always explaining herself. I hated the damsel in distress routine. I got tired of hearing how attractive all of these young characters were.

Narrators:
Samantha Summers voiced Beulah’s character. I enjoyed the southern twang.
Kyle Munley was the voice of Jasper.
This was my first time listening to both narrators. I enjoyed both. This was a dual narration.
Audible provides the highest quality audio and narration. This was an unabridged audiobook. Listening time 6 hours 38 minutes. I listened at 2.3x speed reducing the listening time.
It’s times like these when I appreciate a good narration experience. Had it not been for these narrators I would’ve skimmed read this book. Instead I enjoyed listening to both narrators perform the scenes. They enhanced my listening experience with great voice actor skills. I appreciated these narrators taking the time to perform these characters scenes.

Similar storyline but I still love Abbi Glines...

I'm assuming that there will be more to the story in the next 2 books and the Sweet Little Lies that Portia kept will be more devious and be worse.

Twists

This is a sweet love story of two people belonging to two different worlds find each otner. They fall in love gradually through each other's actions and show of kindness. They are just getting ready to begin their life together when a bombshell is dropped into their laps. This book ends on a cliffhanger that will have you wanting to pick up book two immediately. The dual narrative is excellent.

Abbi Glines = sugar & a lil spice 💋

If you liked the Rosemary beach series by this author (especially Rush) you will like this series as well! While in this first book there are similarities between Rush and Jasper...the chemistry isn’t as cohesive (at least in this 1st book)
I’m excited for book 2 after this cliffhanger....⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

couldn't finish

I love Abbi but this one fell short for me. Jasper's character has no depth or if he does I didn't read that far, but I should know who he really is by halfway at least.

Terrible Narration

Couldn't finish listening it was so bad. The narrator's put on accents made them sound 80 years old.
The story itself was ok but nothing like what I'm used to getting from Abbi
