Publisher's summary

From the halls of Montezuma...

Former Marine Captain Alexander Hale only wanted a weekend out with some old buddies. He could have done without the gang war, the shootout, and...oh yeah, the alien abduction.

Now he's in the middle of something he doesn't understand, never asked for, and is having quite possibly the greatest time of his life. Semper Fi and which way are the shores of Tripoli anyway?

Takes a logical approach to super powers

Unlike most books with metahumans that sometimes take a comic step from reality. Evan takes a well thought out and unique method for gaining super powers. Alien probes are wandering the galaxy taking out organic life and enhanced the most violent humans it could find when it arrived and set them on a path of rampage.

And things happen from there, good plotting. With the author being Canadian, Iliked this line. "you know the worst thing about the Canadians?” Mickey asked. “What?” “No one ever suspects them,”

A bit overly-complicated

I had to rewind and re-listen and try to commit names to memory when I started listening as too much was thrown at the reader too fast. The story was good and thus the 4-star rating. The narration was solid and smooth with no noticeable flubs. I liked the characters, but because it there were thrown at you fast and furious, it took away from enjoying the story. The story is interesting and I will pickup book 2 when it goes on sale. The slow build up of the super-powers leaves lots of room to grow and should make an exciting story and the mixture of gang members, military, and civilians should provide some tension in future books.

I like the unknown parts like who the aliens are really

I really enjoyed it cool take on the origin of super powers being a plot to wipe out life in its entirely rather than normal super soldiers from an experiment

Takes 3 hours to get to powers

Narrator basically reads the book with little difference in voices. Story takes incredibly long to become interesting.

It's another hit!

Thoroughly enjoyed it! Great storyline and lots of potential for a nice long series! As with all Evan Currie books, this one is well worth the read!

Off to a very slow start but did build in the end.

I liked it but compared to the awesomeness of his odyssey series it does not compare

Superhuman

This is a great fast paced audio. The narrator had all the characters brought to life with his voice.
I'm looking forward listening to the rest of this series.

Reasonably solid.

good concept and overall fun book, very solidly a 4 star though, the writer will likely get better as he writes more, the narration was not terrible but it didn't blow me away. As a gun guy one thing that was incredibly annoying the the very small random firearm facts that are so blatantly wrong it blew my mind, especially with many of the basic facts being accurate, it's like the author did a lot of research but either forgot small things or just didn't do that last 2% of research that was needed.

3 main cases: he talks about .45 ACP like it's some significantly more powerful round than 9mm when they have extremely similar ballistics and no experienced military spec ops guys would think about those ammo types like that.
He brings up a Russian revolver and talks about it being insanely powerful, then says its chambered for 5.56mm... Which is laughable for two reasons, first being powder burn and mass times velocity, second is the revolver he is talking about shoots the equivalent is 500 SW magnum which IS a monstrous round.
Then he introduces the Russian KS-23 shotgun, gets all the info right until he calls it and auto loader... Nope it is pump action only.

These firearm nerd gripes aside, I enjoyed it and look forward to the next one.

Boring

This book was like every briefing I had in the military overextended and monotone. This book was read like military training material. I was reading some of the reviews and wondered if they were listening to the same thing I was. The book started slow gave you zero reasons to care about the characters and as stated in another review took about three hours to get to the powers part. This might have been a book for some but for me this was painful. Glad it was a freebie
