One town. One murder. One million hot dogs.

Welcome to Argyle. Grab a hot dog and allow town narrator Jeremy Zax (Bob Odenkirk) to regale you with this region’s rich history! Founded in 1843 by settlers with their sights set on California, these brave souls grew too tired and instead settled for Ohio. Argylites love to celebrate the spirit of “close enough,” like that of Richie McDonough (Brian Posehn) a young man who was a stupendous substitute bowler that never bowled and instead kept the bench warm. His untimely, mysterious death in the Summer of 2013 is Argyle’s darkest secret.

Hear how Richie met his fate, beginning with Argyle’s annual hot dog eating contest and ending with the town’s annual murder. Along the way, you’ll see that Argyle truly has it all: a DMV that’s also a fancy restaurant; the world’s largest lost-and-found; a surgeon who doubles as a magician; and so much more!

Created and written by Nate Odenkirk (The New Yorker, The Onion) and his father Bob Odenkirk (Mr. Show, Better Call Saul, Breaking Bad), Summer in Argyle is proudly Audible’s second best murder comedy. This offbeat Audible Original features some of today’s biggest comedy stars, like David Cross (Arrested Development), Tim Robinson (I Think You Should Leave), Paul F. Tompkins (Comedy Bang! Bang!), plus Carl Tart, Stephanie Courtney, Lyric Lewis, Stephanie Hsu, andmore. Summer in Argyle is like listening to an old-time radio theatre show soaked in silly and blended with absurdity to produce a perfect froth of nonsense.

As they say in Argyle: Welcome to Argyle - and welcome, to YOU.

Discover memoirs and essay collections, scripted podcasts, and even—in the case of our winner—a documentary series. The protean nature of this list makes sense for comedy, because there’s humor just about everywhere and in everything if you’re looking for it. Sometimes that humor is just plain silliness, but sometimes that humor gets down to the core of what it means to be a person—a way to make sense of the bumps and bruises we get along the way.

In the Odenkirk’s Mind

It was recommended by an “Odenkirk” and it did not disappoint. After watching Murders in my Building, I would like to hear more stories! This family is beyond blessed with comical talent. Your Mom would have liked this and it was clean fun. She would be so proud of Nate and you. Go Odenkirk men!!

Mediocre at best

The story itself was only mildly compelling with a disappointing end. There were some laughs, but also a lot of extremely un-funny filler (I didn’t need to hear a 2 minute song about the DMV especially after hearing a similar song earlier in the episode). Something to listen to but not enjoyable. Wouldn’t recommend.

Subtle message delivered in slapstick

I felt transported to another time when day-to-day existence did not have a "is-this-really-happening?" quality.
It was difficult at first, requiring a disquieting transition, but once I passed through that phase I was good to go.
All I can say is, more, more, more....I need more of this. I could have stayed in Argyle for the rest of time.

Charming.

I really liked this. Fun & simple, with natural-sounding conversational reading of the script, not overwrought & melodramatic like most audio performances.

Is this all just a big meta put on?

I had trouble deciding whether this was a lazy effort to be funny, or an earnest effort to be unfunny. As the comedic theme of the story is inverting the virtue of effort for idleness, I have to wonder if it's all just a big in-joke at the expense of the saps who will discover that they overpaid for a free Audible program. As per the summary, it claims to be "soaked in silly and blended with absurdity", but what it singularly lacks is the comedic discipline to raise it above something more than just a script of mad-libs and wide-eyed "neverminds" from a local improv theatre troupe. It's no surprise that Paul F. Tompkins is involved, if anyone remembers his podcast several years back (it may still be active for all I know), in which guests role-played famous literary figures to the host's H.G. Wells (I believe?). Problem was nobody told the guests to bone up on their characters, and it resulted, quite predictably, in the unscripted awkwardness of the culturally illiterate. This effort is at least more polished, but it's nothing approaching comedic excellence.

Odenkirk Tour de Force

Thoroughly enjoyable. Quirky, original and great entertainment. I do hope that the Odenkirks will release additional episodes.

A must listen for fans of Mr. Show.

I had just gotten into Audible when I saw this and had Bob Odenkirk in it. I read the synopsis and just turned it on not knowing anything about it. I instantly recognized so many voices, and I immediately recognized the humor.
Looked up the cast online and it all made sense.
thoroughly enjoyed it and hope they make more.

This was such a treat for long time fans of Mr. Show. Trust me.

Made me laugh!

I am so grateful that I happened upon this podcast! Listened to it in the car and am sure the drivers around me thought I was crazy as I laughed at the absurdity of it. The music - especially the jingles - were fantastic.
