Publisher's Summary

Summary: We Were Eight Years in Power: An American Tragedy by Ta-Nehisi Coates by Abbey Beathan

(Disclaimer: This is NOT the original book. If you’re looking for the original book, it is available from Amazon.)

Ta-Nehisi Coates delivers his provoking view on race in America, the presidency of Barack Obama, and everything it affected.

We Were Eight Years in Power provides us with the author’s overview over the eight years of the Obama presidency and how white supremacy during the Obama era helped Donald Trump become president.

(Note: This summary is wholly written and published by Abbey Beathan. It is not affiliated with the original author in any way.)

History has a tendency of repeating itself. As Coates notices, the American experiment in multiracial democracy, which ended with the return of white supremacist rule in the South, has a chilling resemblance to election of Donald Trump following the election of the first black president in the history of the United States of America. He examines the effects of the nation’s unresolved history, combined with the movement and ideas that are a result of Obama’s election.

Ta-Nehisi Coates reflects on the hopes that the election of the first black president brought and the crushing realization that one man cannot change the course of an entire nation.

It sums up everything!

Everyone of us is entitled to have our own opinion in each issue and this is a nice one to listen. This summarizes all of what happen during Obama and Trumps term in the government. Love to listen this!

History!

This is quite a good one to listen. Watched a lot of this history on TV and it was really something. I love listening to this and hopefully I can have this in writing as well.

Good job

The author’s attention to details; his warping from past to present; and his personal story as it relates. A truly great book!

Be an informative citizen

This book covers more than the Obama presidency, it provides a deep background into our race relations, present and past. It is well researched, and provides the best insight into what is happening in our lives right now.

Classically fresh

A powerful wake-up call for complacent white people like me, and a plausible explanation for the sudden emergence of Trumpism. The precise and graceful prose is a great pleasure throughout.

A powerful book

If you have followed the works of Coates closely then you may be acquainted with some of the articles he includes in this collection. Even so, it is yet another insightful and enlightening read. I am a fan.

Brilliant work

Magnificent. In addition to the clarity of his vision and the strength of his thinking, we are delighted by the beauty of his voice. This was my first reading of Ta-Nehisi Coates; it won't be my last.

For true understanding.

Barring a near magical cultural evolutionary leap, we are will likely to find ourselves here when we get there - the same place we were back then. Abbey, in his calm, authentic way, bends over the body politic, straightens up, and delivers his prognosis: There is no hope, though there may still be a way.

Faith is the key

Outstanding writer with a true point of view. It does not matter what your background is, as this author explains the America that can be forgotten or ignored.

The book was very insightful

An excellent and beautifully written series of essays. The sobering explanation of where we are in the current political debacle. A must read for concerned citizens.
