Publisher's Summary

Explore the captivating history of the Sumerians.

The sheer importance of Sumerian culture in regards to world culture as a whole is impossible to overstate. This civilization is single-handedly responsible for some of the most major innovations in nearly every field relevant to maintaining a civilized society - this includes religion, lawmaking, architecture, schooling, art, literature, and even entertainment.

Naturally, most of what we see as negative aspects of society were established in ancient Sumer as well. There wasn’t an aspect of Sumerian life that wasn’t plagued with corruption or devastation of one form or another. In other words, the Sumerians gave us both the sublimity of faith and the rigidness of religious thought coupled with a desire for political supremacy. They gave us both the benevolent, caring monarchs and cruel, punishing tyrants; the educated child and the spoiled brat; the hard-working agrarian and the drunken reveler; and the epic empires as well as the pathetic remnants of them. The Sumerians did it all, and they did it first.

Some of the topics and questions covered in this audiobook include:

  • The ancient Sumerians in a nutshell
  • The social structure of ancient Sumerians
  • The religion and mythology of ancient Sumerians
  • The Sumerian kingdoms chronology
  • The everyday life of ancient Sumerians
  • Sumerian innovations
  • Sumerian culture
  • Sumerian “foreign policy”: relations with other nations
  • And a great deal more you don't want to miss out on!

Good overview of Sumerian history

Quite a good recording although some of the pronounciations of Sumerian terms were atrocious. Scholarship up to date and overall a good overview of Sumerian history and society.

The Story of One of Recorded History

I enjoyed this book from beginning to end. Because Sumerian and its cities were the first recorded civilization it is especially interesting and even exhilarating to learn how the people first modified, prearranged, and revolutionized to resolve the multitude of issues and problems related to living close to each other in large numbers. I encourage everyone to read this well written book!

Good Book, very informative... This book appears to be a shortened version of a larger text. This was just enough info to satisfy my curiosity.

nice book

Very nice book! This book contains a nice discovery of the past that will let its readers know more about the events that took place back in time. Everything that I need to know was actually discussed here such as the government, religion, and social structure of this fascinating culture. Beckett even tackled the secret lives of the Sumerians. Hopeful book for our life

Good read...

The Sumerians; is a well written and easy to read. It doesn't bog down with too much technical data. It also gives a clear and precise linage of kings and events that lead to our present civilization.

So I would recommend.

There is nothing wrong with this book other than the fact that this is a bit short. They give a very brief overview of the subject which leaves me wanting more. So I would recommend getting a standard size book on the subject and start by reading that.

The state of the art history.

This is the state of the art History book for us. There are many new findings and upgrades to the information now. However, this volume is reliable for much about ancient Sumerian, Babylonia, Assyria, and points in-between.
