Publisher's summary

Unflappable flapper and Town & Country scribe Daisy Dalrymple searches for a killer whose vicious pen matches a murderous heart in this delightful installment of Dunn's cozy mystery series.

In the 1920s, in post - World War I England, the Honorable Daisy Dalrymple, newly engaged to Detective Inspector Alec Fletcher, is asked by her brother-in-law to discreetly investigate a series of poisoned pen letters that many of the local villagers have been receiving. When the pompous and unbearable brother of the local vicar is killed by a very large rock, dropped on his head from a great height, it seems clear to all that this campaign of gossip has escalated to murder. With the help of her husband, who'd rather she not get involved, Daisy tries to uncover who wrote the letters and who that person has driven to murder before the killer strikes again.

Au revoir

The time has come for the Hon. Daisy and I to part company. Having listened to seven stories (which are now formulaic), they are increasingly overtaken by Daisy’s endless inner voice/musings and cogitating exceeding the actual conversations and clues, to the extent that I am no longer able to figure out whodunnit, myself. I enjoyed the first few but now am giving up.

I’ve reached the point of being amused

I’ve been enjoying these Carola Dunn light mysteries and decided to tough it out through Chiaromonte’s narration. At this point in the series, I look forward to each chapter to see which pronunciations she will mangle. It’s been somewhat harder to appreciate the pauses at the wrong time, the misplaced emphases on a word or phrase. (What?) Do people audition for this job? And how did she earn the right to narrate after her first abysmal performance? Now there’s a mystery.

Very cozy indeed!

I love these books! Such a warm cozy feeling of times gone by! The only reason fo the 4 instead of 5 stars is That I have to reserve the 5 stars for my absolute favorite books like Charles Finch series and Veronica Speedwell series.

Love this series

The characters have enough substance to keep the story interesting. The narrator is perfect for the main character!

Best at 1.2 speed

1920s, England, village, family, family-dynamics, friendship, historical-novel, historical-research, murder, murder-investigation, threats, law-enforcement, situational-humor, verbal-humor*****

What nitwit wrote the publisher's blurb? Daisy is not yet married to DCI Alex, and the *very large rock* that caused death was a marble winged angel atop a gravestone.
For those new to the series, the story can stand alone but will trigger curiosity. Daisy goes to the country at the behest of her brother-in-law who is distressed by some odd letters accusing him of misdeed. No blackmail asked for. Daisy does discover that others in the village have also received similar missives. Now comes the murder and her sleuthing has two goals! Good story.
I did find that I could tolerate the narrator by upping the speed a bit.
