The unknown fourteenth-century author of The Cloud of Unknowing and of The Book of Privy Counselling is believed to be responsible for several other spiritual treatises and translations, including Hid Divinity, An Epistle of Prayer, An Epistle of Discretion of Stirrings, An Epistle of Discretion of Spirits, and The Study of Wisdom.

In this translation of three tracts by the same author, based on the British Museum manuscript Harleian 674, Clifton Wolters gives the reader access to some of the rare treasures of Medieval mysticism: A Treatise of the Study of Wisdom that Men Call Benjamin, A Letter about Distinguishing Impulses and A Treatise of Discretion of Spirits.

With support from the Sisters of the Love of God, an enclosed contemplative order of Anglican nuns in Oxford, Wolters brings these little-known classics of Medieval English contemplative spirituality to life for a modern audience.
