Publisher's Summary

For fans of A Street Cat Named Bob and Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World, Strays is a compelling true story of a man who rescues a stray, injured cat and how they save each other.

Homeless, alcoholic, and depressed, Michael King lives in a UPS loading bay on the wrong side of the tracks in Portland, Oregon. One rainy night, he stumbles upon a hurt, starving, scruffy cat and takes her in. Nursing her back to health, he names her Tabor, and she becomes a bit of a celebrity in Southeast Portland. When winter comes, they travel from Oregon to the beaches of California and to the high plains of Montana, surviving blizzards and bears, angry steers and rainstorms. Along the way people are drawn to the spirited, beautiful cat and moved to help Michael, who cuts a striking figure with Tabor riding high on his backpack or walking on a leash.

Tabor comforts Michael when he's down, giving Michael someone to love and care for, and inspiring him to get sober and to come to terms with his past family traumas and grief over the death of his life partner. As they make their way across the West Coast, the pair become inseparable, healing the scars of each other's troubled pasts. But when Michael takes Tabor to a veterinarian in Montana, he discovers that Tabor has an identification chip and an owner in Portland who has never given up hope of finding his beloved cat. Michael makes the difficult choice to return to Portland and reunite Tabor with her owner. Now Michael must create a new purpose in his life after Tabor.

The authentic tale of an adventurous and charismatic cat and her compassionate human admirers, Strays proves the healing power of love and the profound bond between humans and animals.

Sad but good

I listened to this book during a very difficult time in this country due to politics and Covid. I have sought out books dealing with animals and their stories because they are typically uplifting as animals provide us with unconditional love. This book was based on a true story which intrigued me. I have to admit upfront that I am extremely sensitive to situations where animals are abused by humans, and also where people are bullied or tormented. Since there were several instances where both those things happened it was hard for me to hear. The ending was not the one I wanted and it truly depressed me.

A good portion of the book centered on the relationship that developed between two beings, and the novel was well written and produced, so I could not give it any but a good rating, but I would warn anyone who realizes they are extra sensitive to maybe skip this one. The ending will unfortunately stay with me for quite some time.

A story so heart warming and wonderful it's almost unbelievable except it's a true story!

We are all worth saving, be it animal or man. A lovely story and I enjoyed it very much! Highly recommend!

😻😻

I didn't quite know what I was getting into with this book. I knew it was about a homeless man finding a cat and their journeys, but had no idea how heartbreaking and wonderful it would be. This book was a delight to read and I'm having to stop myself from looking up both Michael and Ron on Facebook to see how all the kitties are doing!

Such a sweet, sad story

A homeless man finds a cat that changes his life. He is reminded how to love and care for someone else. It is exactly what he needs to improve his life. Meanwhile, the cat's owner misses her. This is a lovely story of love, loss, and growth. I have a greater understanding of living homeless, especially for those who have options. This is a very touching tale.

More than meets the eye.

I really enjoyed the story of Tabor, Mike and Ron, but it was not necessary to detail their sex preference. That part did not bring anything more to the story. Was the author trying to say that only gay people have these feelings or only gay people are nice enough to care for an animal and do the right thing by returning the pet to his owner? I probably won't recommend this.

Portland,OR has Vet clinics!

SPOILER ALERT.... He could have taken the cat to any Vet Clinic to have it scanned for a chip and that would have saved the owner from suffering and heartache. The adventure sounds fun but come on.. it's not your cat.
