Publisher's summary

In this powerful entry in the number-one New York Times best-selling series, Mercy Thompson must face a deadly enemy to defend all she loves....

My name is Mercedes Athena Thompson Hauptman, and I am a car mechanic.

And a coyote shape-shifter.

And the mate of the Alpha of the Columbia Basin werewolf pack.

Even so, none of that would have gotten me into trouble if, a few months ago, I hadn’t stood upon a bridge and taken responsibility for the safety of the citizens who live in our territory. It seemed like the thing to do at the time. It should have only involved hunting down killer goblins, zombie goats, and an occasional troll. Instead, our home was viewed as neutral ground, a place where humans would feel safe to come and interact with the fae.

The reality is that nothing and no one is safe. As generals and politicians face off with the Gray Lords of the fae, a storm is coming, and her name is Death.

But we are pack, and we have given our word.

We will die to keep it.

Now I get to wait all over again...

Having finished this entire book the day of its release, I find myself elated and disappointed all at the same time; elated because it was a solid addition to one of my favourite series and disappointed because now I have to wait all over again for the next book!
I will say that there were some plot points that I felt could have been resolved a bit more completely and more answers given, but without spoiling anything, I think the big bad in this story is bigger and badder than we see in this installment and more opportunities will come to fill in the blanks...
So overall, I give this book full marks and prepare to bite my nails until Patricia Briggs releases the next masterpiece :)

Awesome overall, but disappointing climax.

I loved all of this book except the way Mercy was used in the climatic event.

While I may understand that what was done was done to raise tension, it made Mercy seem less intelligent than I have come to expect of her. Less battle ready. Just less Mercy. The clues that she also got, so it's not a case of reader gets more info, were glaringly obvious. that it took so long for her to use them felt wrong and felt an insult to her "intelligence."

To make it worse, you showed her problem-solving skills earlier.

Please don't make her this slow again.

I quit reading a different authors book series when, after six books, the protagonist continued to do the same stupid thing.

thoroughly disappointed

I love the Mercy series from the beginning. but as we get further and further along I'm just tired of her whining about Stephan even though all he has ever done is help her, and now the author has decided in this and her alpha and omega series to start chopping out old enjoyable characters. My wife says this is "growth" I say I don't need to read any more.

However I do love the narrator still.

Love Mercy stories

As always, Briggs does an excellent job in plotting, characters, editing, consistency - so many points that make her work top quality.
In this book, it feels like Mercy has taken a step back in the story, most especially in the climactic fight scene. She’s standing there like she’s in a daze or fugue, describing the spellcasting and the dragon??? And, when Wolfe is caught in a spell, Briggs suddenly has Mercy dancing, collecting, and severing the ribbons to the zombies. It’s off.
I’m going to wait a bit and relisten to see if it’s me or the story.
Lorelei King is one of my favorite narrators and I believe she does a wonderful job for the book and Mercy Thompson series.

Witches, Werewolves and Warfare

Wow, this book. Non stop action.
We finally seem to be in a place where most of the relationships seem to be ironed out well enough to focus the majority of the book on the plot and the overall world that Briggs has created.

I’ll be honest, ever since the “Christie” book debacle, I’ve been somewhat struggling with the Mercy Thompson series. Don’t get me wrong, I was still enjoying the books, just somehow felt that they weren’t as captivating as the previous ones.

But oh my, Storm Cursed blew my reservations right out of the water. This book is clever and funny and intriguing and simply so very alive. I loved every second of it and almost ‘read’ it in one go..

Lorelei King is great, as always. She has perfected the voices for each and every one of our beloved characters. Hands down, one of my favorite female narrators.

Get. This. Book. Now.
And be prepared to be unable to stop, once you started ;)

Yes! Mercy is back!!!

I cruised through this book at Mach 5. I ate it up without chewing. That's how much I liked it. So glad that Mercy's stories are just getting better and better.

Same ol, same ol

I love Lorelei King as a narrator, the story left a little to be desired. It is a rehash of the past stories, nothing really new. I rated this four stars because I enjoy the writing, but kept saying throughout, “really?” Same ol, same ol.

OK, a few issues.

I currently caught up with the series to get ready for this one and I started to notice some issues. Mercy is an Native American woman who is written by a White woman and it shows. There is a scene where Mercy has a run in with a racist local police officer that just made me cringe. The officer openly harrases the Hispanic community to the point were they are reluctant to call for help. He reacts badly to Mercy's skin color and she backs him down, she is protected by her status in the community. Afterwards it is explained to Mercy that the officer is really a great guy with trauma cases and will hopefully be promoted out of the field soon. If Briggs attempted to show the affects of this (incredibly common) type of racism it did not come through, it just felt like a gross "racists can be good guys too" sort of moral.
Overall the plot was pretty packed. There was so much action squeezed into the book that the pacing and character development that I enjoyed so much in the previous books was pretty much missing.

what happened?

I've loved this series for years, and have given 5 star ratings in the past. This book however I must have nodded off and missed what happened because I was waiting for the story to get started and it ended. What did I miss? Having waited excitedly for this book I must say it came up short.
