Publisher's summary
When Max Kane gets word that a retired Navy SEAL friend of his has been picked up for suspicion of murder, he rounds up his sister and they drive to NAS Corpus Christi, Texas to discover the truth.
NCIS has decided Chief Petty Officer Clive Garrett is guilty of killing his ex-wife. And why not? Since the chief retired six months ago, he had turned heavily to the bottle for comfort, and the ink on his divorce was barely dry before his ex-wife married a Navy pilot. But Max quickly finds out that not all murders are as clear-cut as they seem.
Max must fight JAG lawyers who don’t seem interested in alternative theories, as well as an old friend who might have been too drunk to know if he killed his former wife. As everything seems to be stacked against this highly-decorated SEAL, Max relentlessly fights for the truth. Can he return his friend’s stolen honor and find the killer?

Story
When a vibrant young woman is found in bed by her hotshot businessman husband, carved from belly to throat with a very sharp knife, the elite Robbery-Homicide Division of the LAPD responds in full force. Best-case scenario for lead Detective Lena Gamble: Nikki Brant's husband killed her, case closed, and on to the next crime scene before the ravenous Hollywood media can get their lurid tabloid machinery up and running.

Story
My husband and I are fighting for our lives in hospital after a terrible car accident. But despite my pain, all I can think about is what our families will find behind our front door. The scarf that has been all over the news, belonging to a dead young woman with honey-coloured hair. I have to speak to the police before my husband can. I’m drifting in and out of consciousness, but when I hear my wife talking to the police, accusing me of the murder of an innocent woman, a cold fear grips me. I know I’ve got a temper.

A humble hero
I enjoyed following Max Cane solve a murder mystery without all the testosterone and hand to hand combat that comes with other mysteries with ex military heroes. I hope his sister shows up in the next Max Cane series.
