Pablum and Platitudes and a perversion of Stoicism

I couldn't finish this book. I barely got through the foreword in which Jeff Bezos, Steve Jobs and Bill Clinton are held out as foremost examples of being a Stoic. Don't know much about Bezos, but I read Jobs biography and, despite his achievements in the business world, he was a miserable excuse for a human being. Everyone knows far too much about Clinton and I need not outline his escapades here to reach the same conclusion about him.

If being like those guys is being a Stoic and then count me out. The author seems to define "success" as the achievement of wealth and power. To do so, one must forget all sense of right and wrong which apparently are just training wheels that should soon be discarded.

In the end, this book has little to do with actual Stoicism as I understand it and is more of a typical self help book full of pablum and platitudes. I kept hearing the voice of Stuart Smalley's "I'm Good Enough, I'm Smart Enough, and Doggone It, People Like Me!".

I enjoyed this book. could be a little more in depth, and felt it was kind of short. But overall, I enjoyed it and don't regret the purchase.

Amazing book.

This book is well worth a couple of bucks, but don't spend a full credit on it!

It's extremely short and concise.

If you're just starting to get into stoicism, and you want to get a broad sense of what it's all about, look no further.

This guide goes beyond an academic study into a realistic practice. The suggestions and exercises are easy but takes discipline to continue the journey .Author's presentation, knowledge, and enthusiasm is great. Thanks,Garry Hudson!
