Story
The fundamental principles of stoicism are that negative emotions come from bad judgment, and the essence of stoicism is to suppress these harmful emotions. We even say true joy is reached by goodness. Stoics described philosophy as a way of life that you can become a sage by. A sage is someone who has attained excellence in the spiritual and the academic. Most thinkers (including Seneca) emphasized the idea that goodness accomplishes pleasure. For this to be accurate, then a sage would be immune to misfortune because misfortune creates unhappiness.

Shetty grew up in a family where you could become one of three things - a doctor, a lawyer, or a failure. His family was convinced he had chosen option three: Instead of attending his college graduation ceremony, he headed to India to become a monk, to meditate every day for four to eight hours, and devote his life to helping others. After three years, one of his teachers told him that he would have more impact on the world if he left the monk’s path to share his experience and wisdom with others.

Do you feel as though something is missing in your life? Do you often feel like your emotions get the best of you? Do you run into trouble within relationships with people at home, at work, in a business, or whatever because you feel like you need to control the situation? Stoicism is an ancient Western philosophy whose simple, time-tested teachings of virtue, confidence, and self-control have inspired generations of scholars and spiritual practitioners...one of its main tenets is that we don’t always have control over what happens to us, yet we do have control over how we react.

Excellent book to know Stoicism
I've listened to numerous audiobooks, but this one stands out. I have been practicing Stoicism for a year and a half; this introduction really reinforced my shallow understanding of Stoicism. The book is well-written and produced, and it serves as a terrific motivational tool for living a happy life.
Daniel's presentation is both instructive and entertaining, and he does an excellent job of selecting extracts and making recommendations for additional research into original sources. Uses pertinent instances from Marcus' life to demonstrate how Stoic philosophy can be applied to our own lives.
Stoicism has numerous advantages, and you will learn how to use particular Stoic concepts in various aspects of life as a result of reading this book. These ideas can be used to learn how to control your emotions better, particularly negative emotions like anger, grief, anxiety, and fear.
If you want to understand more about Stoicism, here is an excellent place to start. This book will teach you what Stoicism really is, and how you can become a true Stoic.

Such a great and amazing book
Such a great book that you will continually refer back to. It's my second time reading it, and I'm still learning. I'm always amazed at how words written so long ago are still applicable today, especially in light of the current mental health crisis. The wisdom included in this book can truly assist empower people who feel they have no control over their thoughts or lives.
I like how the author arranges the fragmented journals of ancient writers into a philosophical theory. I also like how the author adds very little commentary and lets the ancient Stoics speak for themselves. The way the author explains the concept is very simple and easy to understand.
This book is a wonderful combination of historical stories and practical applications of Stoic philosophy. Furthermore, it is both digestible and interesting. Everything was very well explained and well put together. Definitely shot some information the way that made me take a step back and question the way things were being done around me and in my own life.
Although I am well versed in Stoic literature, I found so much in this book that I will go back to – again and again. But my mom, who is new to Stoic thinking, also enjoyed this book hugely. That is a remarkable achievement for the author and why I am pleased to recommend this book.

Amazing
This audiobook was amazing and extremely informative. It's an excellent place to start learning about Stoicism. After reading the description of this book, I expected it to be nothing more than a Stoicism reference book. I had not anticipated being unable to put it down, but that is exactly what occurred.
There are several good books for modern practicing Stoics, but this is, in my opinion, the greatest. Marcus Aurelius' life story is used to tell a clever synthesis of stoicism. The integration with modern cognitive therapies has been masterfully executed.
Daniel does an excellent job of not only describing but also placing these complexities and intricacies in their historical context. He effectively combines intelligent comments with the great Stoics' own words. The result is a one-of-a-kind and valuable addition to modern Stoic literature.
I highly recommend this book to anyone new to Stoicism or wanting to delve deeper into its teaching and practices.

Must-have
Stoicism is an ancient philosophy. It asserts that virtue (meaning self-control, courage, justice, and wisdom) is happiness. To achieve virtue, and thus live happily, one must master the three Stoic disciplines: perceptions (how you see and understand the world), actions (how you act based on what you see), and will (how you feel when events are outside your control.
This book may be short but I believe it serves its purpose. I’ve listened to this book already but I still listen to it every day. It serves as a book vitamin to me.
1. It helps me have a positive attitude when I’m feeling down.
2. It gives me a whole new perspective.
3. It helps open my mind and help me understand things.
4. It helps me find something positive in a negative situation.
5. It just lifts me.
These are just some of the things that this book did to me. I do hope it has the same effect on you. And aside from this book, prayers will definitely work wonders, no doubt about it (other religions, please don’t take offense in this - I apologize if I’ve offended anyone with this, that’s not my intention).
A solid five stars for it!

Great info
For anyone new to Stoicism, this book is a must-read! This book is really more for beginners with Stoicism, but it does exactly what it says on the tin: it presents Marcus Aurelius' Stoicism for a popular audience (not meant as a pejorative - I simply mean there isn't a lot of Greek or technical terms and such, but basic concepts are presented directly and clearly).

Enjoyed listening
Even though I have been practicing Stoicism for a few years and am familiar with both ancient and modern literature, the author does an excellent job of infusing a contemporary flavor, and I enjoyed listening to this book. I wish he'd selected a more appropriate title, but it works because it spans Marcus Aurelius' entire life.

Despite the fact that I've been practicing Stoicism for a few years and am familiar with both ancient and contemporary literature, I loved listening to this book since the author does a fantastic job of incorporating a modern flavor. I wish he'd chosen a more fitting title, but it's adequate because it covers Marcus Aurelius' entire life.
