From Australian Author comes a new small town mystery

Fourteen long years have passed since Rain Dang's sister vanished without a trace. Now a seasoned detective, Rain is unexpectedly called back to the small town she once called home — not just to solve a murder, but to confront her past. As she delves into the investigation, the cold case of her sister's disappearance begins to heat up, intertwining with sinister secrets the town has long buried. But in a place where the waters run deep and the currents are treacherous, not everyone wants the truth to surface. Faced with hostility from a community that still resents her, Rain must navigate the dangerous tides of suspicion and deceit. Because in a town like this, the deeper you dive, the darker it gets. Will Rain find the answers she seeks, or will the murky depths of her hometown swallow her whole?

From Australian Author C.L. Doon comes a new small town Mystery, based in the country town called Tumut, where the snow caps the mountains and Apples grow on trees. This book blends real history with fiction.

This was my first C.L. Doon book, and it definitely won’t be my last. The first installment in the Detective Rain Dang duet is a gripping and captivating small town mystery. The characters are well developed, and the storyline kept me engaged from beginning to end with its intriguing plot and well executed twists and turns. Angela Peters delivers a great performance, bringing the story and its characters to life. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. So I read another work by this author under a different pen, loved it so much, that I had to explore this too.

Written in first-person POV.
Past tense.
Takes us slightly back in time as the lead revisits old traumas.

I was not disappointed—she writes a good police-procedural! It had a lot of vibes that I’ve read a lot, however, the case went and ended up a bit differently and I really appreciate the variety.

A few highlights I noticed:
Strong female lead, who has grown.
‘Big city’ cop, coming home to her—
—small town life.
Missing persons / murder investigation.
She has to team up with her ex.
‘Mean girl’ vibes from neighbor/ fellow citizens.
Light hazing from the ex / fellow detective.
Lots of drama.

Overall:
A fun listen that kept me company on some not-so-fun errands and household tasks. Thank you, author. 4 stars!

🎙️ Audiobook:
I loved this narrator, she sounded so great and I enjoyed her accent—so easy to understand, but pleasantly different than what I’m most-used to as an American.
Overall sound quality was flawless. 5 stars.

Another great one from Doon!!

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Clear Waters. The vivid, authentic descriptions of the small Australian town made it incredibly easy to visualize the setting.

While I was initially unsure if this story would be for me, narrator Angela Peters did a fantastic job pulling me into Rain’s world within just a few minutes.

Rain is a compelling protagonist—a detective of mixed heritage whose family has deep roots in the community. You get a profound sense that, ever since her sister’s disappearance fourteen years ago, she has never quite felt whole.

Beneath the surface of this gripping investigation lies a deeper, moving narrative about family, belonging, and the painful necessity of returning home to face old shadows.

After her sister Lily disappeared, the town turned toxic, casting unfair accusations toward their father.

Rain returns to Tumut on official business after a car was pulled from the river. With the investigation stalled for a month, the chief is relying on her fresh set of eyes to crack what is now being treated as a homicide.

Rain must work to solve the case with limited information while battling the prejudices of a town that holds long-standing grudges.

To make matters more complicated, she must navigate her past with Dean—the man she loved but left without saying goodbye—who has been sharp and dismissive toward her, as he is one of the detectives currently assigned to the river case.

I found myself deeply invested in Rain’s journey, rooting for her as she painstakingly analyzed the evidence that didn’t add up.

I was also deeply invested in the personal side of her return—specifically the hope that she could find resolution with Dean and finally lay the ghosts of her past to rest.

The prose is powerfully atmospheric at setting the scene, and Angela Peters truly brings it to life; I was especially taken by the imagery of the bridge, with wood that "sagged like an old man’s shoulders," which helped paint such a clear picture in my mind.

Clear Waters is a compelling murder mystery that keeps you hooked right through to the final minutes. The suspense is masterfully sustained, and the setting adds a layer of authenticity that makes the story feel grounded and real.

I highly recommend this audiobook to any mystery lover who appreciates a story rich in atmosphere and heartfelt local detail.
