Here are the thrills, grandeur, and unabashed fun of the Greek myths, stylishly retold by Stephen Fry. The legendary writer, actor, and comedian breathes life into ancient tales, from Pandora's box to Prometheus's fire, and transforms the adventures of Zeus and the Olympians into emotionally resonant and deeply funny stories, without losing any of their original wonder. Learned notes from the author offer rich cultural context. This volume is a doorway into a captivating world.

Story
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

On June 6, 1944, 150,000 Allied troops landed on the beaches of Normandy and suffered an astonishingly low rate of casualties. Operation Fortitude, which protected and enabled the invasion, and the Double Cross system, which specialized in turning German spies into double agents, deceived the Nazis into believing that the Allies would attack at Calais and Norway rather than Normandy.

Holding power for over 50 years starting in 1327, Edward III was one of England's most influential kings and one who shaped the course of English history. The Viking Age - from 750 to 1050 saw an unprecedented expansion of the Scandinavian peoples into the wider world. As traders and raiders, explorers and colonists, they ranged from eastern North America to the Asian steppe. But for centuries, the Vikings have been seen through the eyes of others, distorted to suit the tastes of medieval clerics and Elizabethan playwrights, Victorian imperialists, Nazis, and more. None of these appropriations capture the real Vikings, or the richness and sophistication of their culture.

Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales. In Norse Mythology, Gaiman fashions primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds; delves into the exploits of the deities, dwarves, and giants; and culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and the rebirth of a new time and people.

For nine seasons Rainn Wilson played Dwight Schrute, everyone's favorite work nemesis and beet farmer. Current events have deep roots, and the key to navigating today’s roiling policies lies in the events that started it all — the 2008 economic crisis and its aftermath. Despite initial attempts to downplay the crisis as a local incident, what happened on Wall Street beginning in 2008 was, in fact, a dramatic caesura of global significance that spiraled around the world, from the financial markets of the UK and Europe to the factories and dockyards of Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America.

Publisher's Summary
From the Norman Invasion in 1066 to the eve of the First World War, Stick a Flag in It is a thousand-year jocular journey through the history of Britain and its global empire.
The British people have always been eccentric, occasionally ingenious and, sure, sometimes unhinged - from mad monarchs to mass-murdering lepers. Here, Arran Lomas shows us how they harnessed those traits to forge the British nation, and indeed the world, we know today. Follow history’s greatest adventurers from the swashbuckling waters of the Caribbean to the vast white wasteland of the Antarctic wilderness, like the British spy who infiltrated a top-secret Indian brothel and the priest who hid inside a wall but forgot to bring a packed lunch. At the very least you’ll discover Henry VIII’s favorite a*se-wipe, whether the flying alchemist ever made it from Scotland to France, and the connection between Victorian coffee houses and dildos.
Forget what you were taught in school - this is history like you’ve never heard it before, full of captivating historical quirks that will make you laugh out loud and scratch your head in disbelief.

Not As Enjoyable As His YouTube Channel
I'm not sure what it was, but while I was highly anticipating this book I can't help but be disappointed. There's just something about the stories that didn't interest me all that much. The performance was good, but I wasn't intrigued. I was also a bit put off by a few references to modern day politics, as well. Sometimes people just want escapism out from the clown world we live in today and it gets a bit annoying and frustrating when it seems to seep into everything.

More to be endured than enjoyed
Not factually enlightening enough to be a legitimate historical text, yet not humorous enough to warrant its classification as an irreverent look at history. Frankly there are better examples of both. As a sale item, I thought it'd be worth the $6, but I can't honestly say that's true. The jokes are mostly low-hanging fruit, and rarely approach wit or clever insight (referencing OJ's lawyers? Might have been a timely joke a quarter century ago). Troublingly, on those occasions which might be considered worthy, there's an uneasy proximity to Douglas Adams, the Pythons and Eddie Izzard, and probably a few more. I won't claim plagiarism, but it's conspicuously unoriginal at times.

A lighthearted account British history. If you like the author’s YouTube channel you will also appreciate this book. The book is Filled with interesting tidbits of UK history.
If I had one criticism it would be his snarky comments toward religion - although, to be fair, the author’s portrayal of David Livingston was even handed.
I hope he releases another book soon 😊

Never, in my short life, have I appreciated the Great British Isle in such a way before. This book is very proudly and respectfully put together and articulated. I had to keep coming back to it as soon as I could chapter after chapter with historic events bought to life in a way some writers and narrators fail too do.

British history with a sense of humour
First of all, Arran's humour is on point. Particularly, the chapter titles were brilliant.
While not a complete history of Britain, the time periods he goes through are interesting, have some fun facts with some jokes and the fact that this is split into two parts was not that bad as both had an equal amount of chapters.
I was not able to get a physical copy of the book so I am glad I have an audiobook adaptation. (I don't know if this is abridged as a result though I enjoyed this anyway so no big deal.)

If only history was taught like this.
The history of England has never been on my list of top 500 things I wanted to learn before I die. It was probably closer to wanting to learn about the history of the lavatory. But I've watched Arron on YouTube for several years now and thought if anyone can make this interesting, he can. I'm now 5hrs in with roughly 8 hrs to go. Every moment of listening to Arron educate me on England's history is informative, interesting, and entertaining. His almost dry British humour has, many times so far, left me literally laughing out loud in my car as I travel between jobs across the NSW countryside of Australia. How I wish my high school history teacher could have expressed themselves in such a way. I surely would not have felt like a potato waiting to take root in the garden of knowledge. I sincerely hope he writes another book some day. But this one may be very hard to top.

It's hard to comprehend the true scope and scale of influence the British Empire has actually had on the world at large even to this day, but this book helps brings all that into focus in such a way that you will be wishing there was more just so your journey through time with Arran was longer.
