Introduction for Harry Potter with one spoiler

This is a discussion between two Audible editors - one who loves Harry Potter and one who has always been overwhelmed by it and never really got into it. This is not actually that different to a discussion my wife and I had a few years back - me loving the books and her never having read them. It is a little precursor to the books, to know what you are in for.

It goes through Katie's experience and how it has impacted her, what she was doing during the times when the books came out and how it has been part of her life since

There are mostly no plot spoilers here, but there are world building things that might be considered spoilers. Things that may take the magic of discovery out - explaining the houses, the storing hat process, the world having race relations issues, etc.

It gives a brief synopsis of the first several chapters of book 1, up to the 11th birthday and the contact attempts.

There is one fairly major plot spoiler in here, being for book three and explaining how Hermione is studying so many classes. it is said explicitly how she does it, which to me is a big spoiler for that book.

There is a focus on the social conscience of the books - how there is a large amount of focus on race relations, inclusion, justice, etc.

It also talks about Jim Dale's narration and his work. Doesn't talk on the Stephen Fry version.

Spoiler Alert: HAS Spoilers.

I just read the series for the first time a few months ago and have read it two more times since. I liked the enthusiasm in this, but I felt Katie went into too much detail. They say there are no spoilers, but she talked about things that, had I not already read the books, would have been upset to realize I found it out ahead of time once I got into the stories. Otherwise, I liked the topics discussed.

Passable for newcomers

2.5 Stars

This is a *very* basic introduction into Harry Potter. Sadly, there's very little, if anything, that present fans of the series will find to enjoy in the listening.

The narrators at times sounded a bit stilted and lacked enthusiasm for the subject. As one was supposed to be a total newcomer to the world of Harry Potter that was alright, but I was surprised at the other who was supposedly a life long fan.

Also, despite saying that this is a spoiler free piece, there are more than a few instances where there are plot points discussed that should be considered spoilers. I shook my head at those as they kept happening.

For something celebrating the 20th anniversary of Harry, I think a lot more energy and excitement should've gone into this. It was such a letdown.

Strange, Kinda Pointless, And Spoilers

This is a very odd book. It's basically two ladies (who I guess are audible employees) talking about the Harry Potter series. One, trying to drum up enthusiasm in the other one to take the plunge and read or listen to the series.

Here's the thing though... I'm not convinced that this book really has an audience. It's not interesting to Harry Potter fans, because there is very little analysis or anything new here. And I would actually not recommend people that haven't read any of the Harry Potter books to listen to this, because despite them constantly saying it's "safe" and "spoiler free", then they go and mention lots of plot points, all throughout the series. She even goes ahead and summarizes a shocking amount of the story from book 1. How is that not a really really big spoiler?

So I really don't know who would actually enjoy this book!

Mild Spoilers Ahead

I liked it, this is just too short and not completely spoiler free. Please make a longer one!

better read the books...

I have grown with the Harry Potter series, so for me this was quite a useless listening, but I guess that for a newbie it answers some questions. However, if you don't know much about Harry Potter, it's still much more fun to learn the story first hand, by reading the books yourself instead of listening to explanations.

No comments about the genius of the insight of JK Rowling.

In addition to the review this author gave the series, she should have included references to the brilliance of JK Rowling’s ability to bring reality and imagination to the level that all people, young & old, throughout the world (regardless of race, nationality, or country of origin) will absorb and enjoy without limit. Most readers read these books with such intensity that being overcome by sleep is the only way they stop reading.
Fantastic beyond belief! What a life!

I would like a follow up!

This is one I love to listen to over and over. It's amazing to hear about different people's experiences in life. One woman, Katie, who grew up with Harry Potter and another woman, Courtney, who managed to avoid it. I love Katie's enthusiasm as she explained the series without spoilers. And I want a follow up of Courtney's thoughts about Harry Potter after listening to the complete series.

Pointless

I don't understand what the point of this was and it didn't seem convincing at all for reading the books. It was narrated like two people sitting down having coffee and one person casually brings up Harry Potter for the millionth time in their friendship and the other person is sick of always being berated for not reading the story and doesn't want to hear any of this but just nods along and pretends to be interested.
