Greg Dean vit sur la scène du stand-up depuis 1977. Il a participé à de nombreuses émissions de télévision, notamment Saturday Night Live et Parade of Stars. Il est un habitué rémunéré du Hollywood Comedy Store et son nom figure sur leur prestigieux Wall of Fame. En 1982, il a ouvert Greg Dean's Stand-Up Comedy Classes, la première école de comédie de stand-up au monde. Dean s'est vite rendu compte qu'il n'existait pas de principes fondamentaux établis pour enseigner ou apprendre l'art de la comédie de stand-up. C'est ainsi que commence la mission de sa vie : identifier les fondements, les techniques et les compétences utilisés par les grands comiques et les auteurs comiques. Ces principes fondamentaux de la comédie de stand-up ont été publiés pour la première fois en 2000. En 2018, Dean a révisé ce livre, en mettant à jour ses techniques d'écriture, de blagues et de spectacle, ainsi qu'en publiant cinq cahiers d'exercices d'accompagnement. La version française a été traduite par son étudiant et assistant Scott Fins.
Dean vit avec sa femme, l’humoriste et actrice Gayla Johnson, en Californie du Sud. Il enseigne et travaille sur un nouveau livre contenant des techniques avancées et des principes fondamentaux afin d'élargir les connaissances disponibles sur l'enseignement et l'apprentissage des compétences nécessaires pour être humoriste.
