Publisher's Summary

Some jobs turn you into a zombie. Literally.

Captain Jayde Thrin of the cargo ship Determination has one goal: make enough money to retire in style. Her small mercenary crew travels the universe taking on odd jobs, but when a botched gig lands them in hot water, it’s up to Jayde to figure out their escape - and survival.

The nearby mining planet M44 provides an opportunity to refuel and make a quick buck, but there’s more going on in the mines than anyone realizes. What Jayde expects to be an easy job turns out to be one of the hardest yet, especially with the outpost overrun with the undead.

Steel for Hire is the first episode of Galactic Mercenaries, a space opera series about zombies, space battles, alien invasion, and a misfit crew trying to survive in a dangerous universe.

A fun little story

Overall I enjoyed the story, the performance felt a bit rushed to me, like the narrator was speaking to quickly. slowing down the playback helped a bit, other then that, the story was a lot of fun.

I received my copy from a author giveaway, however I think its worth the asking price, and would have gladly paid for it,

Good story, but fast narration

I thought the story was good. It was a little slow at first, but once the plot started to really develop, I was getting into it. It was a good listen while I was at the gym (yeah...don’t judge). The narrator had some good ways in which she performed the voices, but I found that she spoke way to fast for me. I had to slow down the speed to x.75 on the app so I could follow along. Even though it made her normal voice sound slurred, it helped to manage the cognitive processing of the overall story and actually made other characters sound more genuine. Overall, I’d give the next chapter a listen when it comes out.

Light listen

This book started a bit slow but got better. It involves a group of mercenaries who start out fleeing from the result of the misdeeds of one of their members and find themselves having to hire out in order to obtain fuel. As it turns out they uncover an evil far worse. This obviously is only the introduction to a series and it does a decent job of making you wonder what the rest of the series is going to hold.

The narration is decent and does a good job with multiple characters and moments of excitement.

This book was provided free of charge with expectation of an honest review.

Entertaining... it grows on you!

I liked this as a space opera. It has a good premise. The plot moves along at breakneck speed, but the character background comes through too.

The narrator really annoyed me to start with. Too much over the top. But it faded into the background of the story after about 20 mins. I also found the pacing of the narration was sometimes at odds with the story - fast and breathless when nothing was going on then more slow and calm during an action sequence.

This is very much written as one in a series. It sets up characters, bad guys, maybe a romance, and some mystery. But it (naturally) doesn’t actually address them.

My only small complaint is that the story could have used some more detailed descriptions of the scenes - the surroundings, etc — and it might have been interesting to learn more about the characters from their actions and interactions rather than hearing more memories and specific statements. Yep - my “complaint” is that I wanted more!

** I received a free copy of this work in exchange for a review.

Great Listen

While shorter than what I typically listen to, I was pleasantly surprised at how well-fleshed out the characters were, and how quickly I was drawn into the story. Really engaging story and narration! How can you go wrong with zombies and space opera?! While the story 'ended', this reader is primed and looking forward to Book 2.
