Publisher's Summary

She's the only one who ever loved him - and the only one he can never have.

Jude lost everything one spring day when he crashed his car into an apple tree on the side of the road. A man is dead, and there is no way he can ever right that wrong. He would forever steer clear of Colebury, Vermont, if he could. But an ex-con in recovery for his drug addiction can't find a job just anywhere.

Sophie Haines is stunned by his reappearance. After a three-year absence, the man who killed her brother and broke her heart is suddenly everywhere she turns. It's hard not to stare at how much he has changed. The bad boy who used to love her didn't have big biceps and sun-kissed hair. And he would never volunteer in the church kitchen.

No one wants to see Sophie and Jude back together, least of all Sophie's father, the police chief. But it's a small town - and forbidden love is a law unto itself.

Steadfast

Jude & Sophie

I quite enjoyed their story; I am not always a fan of the past and present in books. This being one of those times, but I am glad we got to have their backstory.

Jude is really going through a hard time. But I have to say I am glad it wasn’t all depressing. Like when he was wallowing, he never did that, he was making plans and following through no matter how hard it was.

I also very much liked seeing him struggle with his addiction, if that sounds mean it’s not meant to. I just mean sometimes authors make addiction fluffy. I liked that he struggles throughout that’s realistic. Because it’s never going to be gone for him. And both he and Sophie are going to have to deal with it.

This story had me wanting more. I did find the ending to be a little rushed but all books can’t be 50000 pages. ;)

The narration was good, I felt Jude's voice was a little old and announcerish for me. Though Sophie's narration was Perfection!

This is a tough one...

I really enjoyed the story. I feel like I saw a small glimpse into the life of an addict. It was definitely pulled at the heartstrings. I laughed out loud a few times and shed a few tears. It was a well rounded love story.

The part I had issue was with the narration...

Seraphine Valentine was excellent. 5 stars

Jeffrey Kafer- 2.5. His cadence was awkward....sort of this monotone for a bit then his voice would drop lower and finish a sentence. I had a super difficult time even starting the audio. Knowing there was a different narrator for the next helped me get through it. As the book went on, it was less dramatic and a bit easier to deal, but then there were these places where the audio would change and get louder then softer (maybe the editing?). His voice overall would be great, if he read more "normally" ?

So many feels

This is one of the Shipley "family" members that I was so hoping to hear about and I wasn't disappointed at all.

The time has come for Jude to leave the Shipley farm and face his demons. He killed Sophie's brother and I thought there would be no way for him to redeem himself. Sophie is his soulmate and when they finally meet again he learns that things aren't going well for her either.

There are a lot of secrets and lies that finally get discovered leaving us with an HEA that made me feel ALL THE FEELS.

seraphine and Jeffrey were great narrators. Although I felt Jeffrey had an older voice than what I thought Jude would have, it was easy to readjust my preconceived notions and slip into his narration.

Great story but...

The male narrator was great but his voice was far too mature for Jude's character. That is a pet peeve of mine. I think it's important to make sure those who narrate match the character.

great story, good female narrator

I enjoyed the story and the series, however I enjoyed the male narrator for the first book way more than Jude's narrator in this book. It sounded like Jude's narrator was trying to read his roll ironically. The narrator for Sophie was amazing. I've been brought in to the heartfelt story of this family and their loves and I enjoy the storylines.

Great story, but

I like this series so far but Jeffrey sounds like "Dragnet". Not much expression. Seraphine did a good job with both male and female voices. I felt like I got a small glimpse into the struggles of an addict.
Definitely worth the read.

5 Stars for this Audiobook, Writer, and Narrators

Any additional comments?

I was provided this audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator in exchange for an unbiased review. I loved this audiobook as a continuation in a series or a standalone. I had previously purchased the ebook and audio upgrade for the first book in the series, but hadn't gotten around to listening to it yet. I went ahead and listened to it first when I was given this second installment. I was unsure how I would like them since this is my first experience with the author and the narrators. However, the author and narrator, Jeffrey Kafer are praised and highly recommended in my facebook group Aural Fixation, so I thought I should give them a try. I FLoved them!!! The writing is excellent with the characters and their world, and the narrators did an excellent job of bringing them to life. I fell in love with Jeffrey Kafer's sexy, gruff and growly voice. I am now looking up other titles of his work to listen to. I can't wait for the third installment of this series to be released so I can emerge myself back into this world. Highly recommended.

Great Listen

I usually stay away from books about high school and teenage angst, but this coming of age story, overcoming addiction, overcoming heartbreak, and finding truth is more than worth the listen. I read the book and listened to the story. I loved the portrayal of the characters by Seraphine Valentine and Jeffrey Kafer, both new narrators to me. I thought they did a great job. It is the first book by this author for me as well. As I said, I usually avoid these types of stories, but this one caught me and kept me interested and rooting for the characters to find their way. More than worth your time and the listen.

Enjoyed the story

I didn't love the performance of Jude. He sounded much older than i thought a 23 year old would.

Farming never felt so appealing

A subtle second chance connection between sportsman turned farmer Griffin and Audrey was a satisfying listen. These two had chemistry but a relationship that took the slow build. I liked the farm setting, the family context and the connection.

Narration was good, dual POV.

Love this series

I loved Jude in book 1. I love him even more now I've read his story, and what a story! We follow Jude as he moves back to his hometown of Colebury and starts working back at his father's garage. Jude thinks his childhood sweetheart, Sophie will be long gone, surprisingly though she's still in town, living in her family home. Neither of them have seen each other since he was sent to prison over 3 years previously. It would seem though that some things haven't changed, firstly their desire for each other, and secondly their need to keep any contact they have with each other a secret. Sophie's dad, the police chief, hates Jude and blames him for the death of his son (Sophie's brother). Sophie still wants answers from Jude about the night her brother died, but Jude can't give her them. No one will answer her questions so she starts her own investigation. So many twists and turns in this excellent story which has some fantastic characters with strong hearts and lots of passion. I was hooked from the beginning and I can't wait to see what Ms Bowen produces next. Whatever it is I'm first in line.

Wow

Loved this story, for the reason that they found their way back to each other after such a terrible accident. And along the way some great friends made and lies uncovered to reveal the truth.
Wow.
Narration was awesome too.
