Christmas is approaching, and Star, a busy single mom and nursing student, is faced with a difficult dilemma. She must choose between missing the annual trip down Candy Cane Lane at her parents' home or potentially losing her part-time job at the medical supply store.

Nick, a lonely professor with a passion for history and a longing to be an inventor, gets entangled in a runaway puppy's leash and slips on the ice right in front of Star's apartment building in Boulder, CO. Star's "almost 8-year-old daughter," Holly, immediately takes on the role of matchmaker.

Star has a tendency to fix people, and Nick is in need of some fixing. She suggests that he take a DNA test, which might help him find a relative and alleviate his loneliness. “None of that for me,” he says. Despite their differing views on life and the holidays, a friendship quickly develops between them.
