Publisher's Summary

Bodyguarding had never made it to Manchester PI Kate Brannigan’s wish list. But somebody’s got to pay the bills at Brannigan & Co, and if the only earner on offer is playing nursemaid to a paranoid soap star, Kate has to swallow her pride and slip into something more glam than her Thai boxing kit.

Offstage dramas threaten to overshadow the fictional storylines till the unscripted murder of the self-styled ‘Seer to the Stars’ stops the show. And to make matters worse her process server keeps getting arrested; her tame hacker has found virtual love; her best friend is besotted with baby; and the normally reliable Dennis gets himself arrested for murder as a result of his latest dodgy business venture. Nobody told her there’d be days like these....

Critic Reviews

"Combines wit and exuberant writing with a careful and clever plot and oodles of perceptive social observation." (The Times)

Undemanding codswallop

This is definitely the worst so far of the Kate Brannigan series.
The story is extremely lame and the characters all lurch further down the road to laughable stereotyping. I come from Manchester but have never heard anyone continually referring to others as “chuck” as the soap star who hires Kate does. Cringe.
The story concerns the murder of a astrologist and each chapter infuriatingly commences with the reading of a horoscope. Boring at best but annoying if you want to re-listen to a chapter.
Richard continues to act like a moron. He probably has mono sodium glutamate poisoning due to his heavy consumption of Chinese (the cuisine not ,apparently, the people but I may be mistaken here)
Alexis becomes an even more stereotypical scouser speaking in stereotypical scousims.
Kate’s analogies and comparisons become increasingly cringeworthy and are often unnecessary. I suppose this is meant to tip the had toward American fictional detectives but mostly doesn’t work well.

book 6

I would say, not as good as the first books. But still a fantastic listen. I just crave more.

Lose the astrology

I've loved this series. Val McDermid writes in a witty, fast paced fashion. The only reason for not giving this five stars was the rather contrived astrological preamble at the start of each chapter. It was tiresome and unnecessary. As I listen in audiobook it is difficult to skip over this as you would with a physical book.

narrator

I found the narrators accent too heavy. took away from the story. love Vals books but the narrator spoiled it
