What made the experience of listening to Standing Like a Stone Wall the most enjoyable?

I loved this book. Such a great rendition of an incredible man.

This is a relatively short but concise narrative about the highlights of Stonewall. I found it to be interesting and fast moving. The narrator was sufficient not to take away from the reading and I listened at speeds varying from 1.25 - 1.5x. Much enjoyed.

Concise Summary of Stonewall

Jackson was truly an amazing person. A life filled with hardships, tragedy and triumph, he lived with a heartfelt love for his fellow man. Few people realize his devotion to the slave population in Lexington. Maybe this was because when he was a kid, a slave lady once told him about Christ and his love for him. Jackson never knew the love of a father and mother like many but he spent his life finding his place in the world. I appreciate Robertson's attempts to give us insight into Jackson's nature and the events of his life that helped shape this great general militarily, spiritually and personally. I would love to spend an afternoon discussing General Jackson with Mr. Robertson.

The narration was ok on a faster speed. However, at the given speed of 1x, the pauses between sentences by Mr. Garrett became too much. I do think Mr. Garret did an okay job and conveyed the intonations with great expertise.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone seeking more knowledge of the many great men of the Confederacy and what motivated them.

The statues of this man are divisive. Learn who he was, a noble man. A person of who we should aspire to model no matter your politics, a man of duty, honor and principal. Listen and learn your historical context.

Standing Like a Stonewall is an extraordinary read that dives deep into the complex life of General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson. James Robertson does a phenomenal job capturing the many layers of Jackson’s personality—ranging from his quirky habits to the immense courage and honor that defined him as a leader.

The biography strikes a great balance between Jackson’s personal story and the Civil War context. It offers plenty of insight into key battles and military strategy without ever straying too far from the man at the center of it all. From his early life to his final moments, the book is well-paced and detailed in all the right places, especially for readers wanting a true understanding of who Stonewall Jackson really was.

Overall, this is a powerful and engaging biography. It’s a five-star read and a must for anyone intrigued by Jackson or Civil War history in general.

Powerful and engaging.
