Story
Kay Willingham led a life as glamorous as it was public - she was a gorgeous Georgetown socialite, philanthropist, and the ex-wife of the vice president. So why was she parked in a Bentley convertible idling behind a DC private school, in the middle of the night, with the man who was the head of that school? Who shot them both, point blank, and why? The shocking double homicide is blazed across the internet, TV, newspapers - and across Alex Cross's mind. Kay had been his patient once. And maybe more.

Publisher's Summary
After a wealthy California socialite awakes in a luxury hotel with no memory of the night before, she finds herself caught in a dark web of mystery and deceit.
Madeline had the picture-perfect life. A handsome, successful husband. A treasured spot near the top of Santa Barbara’s elite social pyramid. Hers was a country-club lifestyle with every luxury money could buy.
Until that morning....
Madeline awoke in a five star hotel, her clothes on the floor, and no idea how she got there.
The nightmare began when she arrived home.
The accusal.
The photos.
Questions she couldn’t answer.
With her idyllic life shattered, and all of Santa Barbara relishing the show, Madeline knows that she’s been set up. But the further she digs into the mystery, the more she becomes entrenched in a web of blackmail, sabotage, and lies.
At the heart of it all remain two killer questions:
Who did this to her?
And how will she upend their plans?

Suspenseful Story and Great Story Telling
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The plot was exciting and kept me on the edge of my seat with each chapter. I thought it was well written and flowed smoothly.
The narration was superb. Melissa Kay Benson masterfully created the personality in each character that truly made them unique and believable. I enjoyed listening to her energy and enthusiasm as she unfolded this tale.
I highly recommend this book if you enjoy suspense and like rooting for the underdog. I look forward to the next one!

Spellbinding story
This was such a spellbinding mystery. There were numerous twists and turns making it hard not to just sit down and listen for hours to find out what happens next. Madeline is a great character; a strong woman, but still realistically human. I loved Bert! He is so caring and yet professional and good at his job. The only character I wasn't overly fond of is Mike. He would have been great as Madeline's friend, but I found it hard to tolerate his foul mouth. I think the author needs to increase her vocabulary if she cannot express a character without inappropriate language, which is the reason I did not give 5 stars to the overall rating. And the reason I would hesitate reading more by this author. The narrator, Melissa Kay Benson, is good, but needs to use lower voices for the men, and there were times it was difficult to figure out which character was talking.
I requested this audiobook from Audiobooks Unleashed and have voluntarily left this review.
