Editorial reviews

The Browns are one of the most beleaguered franchises in sports - they haven't won a title since 1964 - but that doesn't mean they aren't one of the most interesting. From the height of the Jim Brown era up to the team's recent futility, veteran Browns beat writer and Cleveland native Tony Grossi's comprehensive and entertaining Tales from the Cleveland Browns Sideline leaves no stone unturned in the team's rich, 68-year history.

Wayne Edwards' authoritative, clear, and eloquent performance makes this essential listening for any Browns fan.

Publisher's summary

Relive all the history and glory of Cleveland football - newly updated!

Ohio coaching legend Paul Brown said he wanted to create "the New York Yankees of pro football" when he assembled the Cleveland Browns from scratch in 1946. Despite his ambition, not even the future Hall of Fame coach could have foreseen ten league championship appearances and seven titles in the team's first ten years. Since their first game, the Cleveland Browns have come to symbolize power, excellence, and gridiron dominance. Now fans of one of the NFL’s most storied teams will recapture all the excitement and glory of Browns football in this newly revised edition of Tales from the Cleveland Browns Sideline.

Cleveland native and veteran football writer Tony Grossi recalls the personalities that sowed one of the NFL's proudest traditions and the characters who have continued to grow it. Fans will discover the unlikely origin of the Marion Motley trap play, the scout's inside story behind "the mad dog in the meat market,” the insult that launched Brian Sipe's rise from a 13th-round draft pick to the league's Most Valuable Player, and so much more. From Jim Brown to Bernie Kosar and up through the modern era, this book captures the colorful characters who wore the plain white uniforms and blank orange helmets like never before.

Unless you REALLY care about the Browns, don’t bother.

This is a collection of one-two line quips about past players and personalities. It might remind you of some names you’ve forgotten.

That very meager fare is marred by a performance that sounds like a sixth-grader trying to read a difficult book for the first time, with incorrect pronunciation of place names and of any words longer than three syllables.

Only for the seriously interested that have a lot of time and patience.

As a browns and football fan I was disappointed

The narrator completely ruined this book. Tony grossi should complain. Constantly mispronounced names. And not pronouncing offense and defense. This guy definitely never watched a game of football in his life. It sounded like a robot reading. For a sports book get a sports guy to read it!

Good book. Narration was weak

Browns fans will enjoy this. Great stories and incite from the past. Narrator is robotic. Mispronounced Kosar and other famous names and football terms.

Not what I expected

This is a book where they tell you a guys name and 2-4 sentence story about them.

Worst part is they will tell you “The “60’s” and then every single guy “He was apart of the last championship in ‘64 that won 27-0”. I get that is a piece of each guys story but I don’t need to hear that 20 times. We get it when you tell us the years they played. So be prepared to hear that, Red Right, Elway, etc a million times
