Publisher's summary

Controversial hockey star Sean Avery's no-holds-barred memoir of high living and bad behavior in the NHL - coupled with the behind-the-scenes glitter of celebrity and media nightlife in New York and LA.

As one of the NHL's most polarizing players, Sean Avery turned the rules of professional hockey on its head. For 13 seasons Avery played for some of the toughest, most storied franchises in the league, including the Detroit Red Wings, the Los Angeles Kings, and the New York Rangers, making his mark in each city as a player that was sometimes loved, often despised, but always controversial.

In Ice Capades, Avery takes his trademark candidness about the world of pro hockey and does for it what Jim Bouton's game-changing Ball Four did for baseball. Avery goes deep inside the sport to reveal every aspect of an athlete's life, from what they do with their money and nights off to how they stay sharp and competitive in the league. While playing the talented villain in the NHL, Avery broke far away from his on-ice character in the off-season, and Ice Capades takes the listener inside the other unexpected and unprecedented roles that Avery inhabited - Vogue intern, fashion model, advertising executive, restauranteur, gay rights advocate, and many more.

Love him or hate him, Sean Avery changed the way professional hockey is played today. Rollickingly honest and compelling throughout, Ice Capades transcends the "sports book" genre and offers a rare, unvarnished glimpse into the world of 21st century hockey through the eyes of one of its most original and memorable players.

Great book for any hockey fan

This book is a must listen if you were a hockey fan in the early 2000s. Avery brings you inside the life of a hockey player, and you find out what happens beyond what a fan sees on tv. What makes it better is that Avery is the one reading it. It comes across more like him telling you his life story than him just reading you a book. Great book and easy listen.

outstanding hockey book

I thought this book was going to be less about hockey and more about fashion and Celebrity nonsense but in fact it was a fantastic look into what it's like to be an undrafted player and make it to the show. A really honest look at being an agitator in the NHL in the 2000s. Red Wings Kings and Rangers fans would love this book.

A Must for any true hockey fan

I am a die hard Canucks fan...I am bred to hate the Rangers, but Avery's bluntness and story telling had me hooked. The on and off ice antics kept me intrigued. Do yourself a favor and have a listen to this. You will not be sorry...

Great Book! Great Insight!

Sean Avery is an interesting person. Loved his evolution as a person. I hated the character he played in the NHL, but would have loved it if he was on my team! Lol.

This book was a delightful surprise & very good from start to finish. I came to love hockey later in life and this book has given me a whole new perspective about what I see when I’m watching & what I thought I knew about the game / players.

Avery’s narration of the book was great. He had a great delivery. His voice, cadence & performance was spot on. I listen to a lot of audio books with a long commute. This was one of the best.

Much better than I expected.

Let's face it, almost no one like Sean Avery, but I had never heard his side of the story. My wife and I listened to this on a cross-country trip and loved it. We are both hockey fans, and both disliked his on ice antics. Of course, we were only getting what the press told us, and not the behind the scenes truth.
I dare you to listen to this book, and not end up respecting him.

Best sports memoir ever written

As a lifelong Philadelphia Flyers and, later, Los Angeles Kings season ticket holder, I remember well when Avery played. He brought an extra spark to the game as an "agitator" unlike any other. I was sitting right behind Rachel Hunter in the stands as a season ticket holder when Avery played for the Kings.

After checking out his podcast, I decided to read (listen) to his book. Wow - what an incredible career he's had. His storytelling is smooth, entertaining, funny, straightforward, and brutally honest. Props to him for remembering so much detail from his early career through his entire time in the NHL.

His reverence for the greats, Chelios, Hull, Shanahan, Yzerman, are respectful and interesting. You learn how much of a team player Sean was and how passionate he was about giving his best every night on the ice.

And he was wise enough to know that life doesn't end with hockey and set himself up perfectly to pursue his passions after hockey and thrive as a former player.

This book walks you through all his relationships with players, coaches, and love interests with a level of honesty and detail I haven't seen before.

Definitely worth a read and a listen with Sean narrating the Audible version flawlessly.

Sean Avery Turns Audiobook World Upside Down!

Decided to listen to Sean Avery's book after hearing him talk about it on the Spittin' Chiclets podcast. Highly recommend for hockey fans. Avery definitely isn't the most popular guy in the hockey world, but I'm a fan of him and loved hearing his journey through both the sport and life.

Great look beings the curtain of an NHL player

I appreciate the honesty and the drive that he describes- more people need to know that they can always get more out of themselves. He should have gone to the Flyers, Philly would have loved him even though he was a Ranger.

Loved it.

I am a huge Sean Avery fan. He was the only player jersey. I was going to buy other than a goaltender. There’s no way to deny what he brought to the New York Rangers, and to hear things in his own words are amazing. The behind-the-scenes working of the hockey world were also fascinating to me. I highly recommend this book not just for entertainment value, but education on the hockey world.
