Publisher's Summary

The final novel in the heartwarming Lancashire-based Gibson Family series by beloved saga author Anna Jacobs.

It is 1860 in Bilsden, the Lancashire mill town, and Frederick Hallam is dying. But first he makes secret plans to smooth the future path for his beloved wife, Annie. Her sister, Joanie, is fed up with everything until a dashing new admirer crosses her path. But a spurned suitor is determined that Joanie will be his, whatever the cost. And he is not the only one who wants to harm the Gibson family.

Meanwhile the Civil War in America cuts off cotton supplies so that times are hard in Bilsden and unemployment is rife. Annie had to rebuild her life after her husband's death and plans to create Spinners Lake, an extraordinary project that will keep her workers from destitution and assuage her own grief.

Tian Gilchrist is caught up in the American war and nearly dies there. He fights his way back to Bildsen, to Annie, whom he has never forgotten.

And the plans that Frederick made for Annie will change her life in unforeseen ways, bringing her hope and happiness once again.

Narrator ruined this book

I sincerely enjoyed the books in the series, EXCEPT this one. Although I endured it to the end, I am sorry I purchased this audible book. Why this particular narrator was chosen is beyond me, but that choice was a mistake!!! Frankly, I wouldn't recommend this audible book to anyone. The story was ok, but not as good as the rest of the series.

New narrator

I was upset about the narrator changing the voices as much as she did. The main character suddenly reverted to her old dialect and not the one she so diligently acquired. Had she narrated it from the start, I might not have minded so much, but she didn't, and she might have tried to read it in keeping with the there first books.

Awful Narrator :/

This story is as good as the rest of the series, which I enjoyed very much. However, the narrator absolutely ruined the experience. Her voice is harsh and flat, accents are horrid.

the final book in the series I have enjoyed the writing and the story I like somethings and hate some I love Annie and fredrick love it was beautiful her second husband is so needy and has no use he just didn't fix in I wonder why she married him he's so weak
when reading this book it takes you on a emotional high like when joanie got rapped I notices rape always play apart in her stories but when joanie told her dad he did believe her it makes me so mad I wanted to stop reading but I continued now the narrator I wish she had still use the narrator who did book 4 this lady makes all the Male characters sounds so old and grumpy just horrible but still and good story

Loved the story , not character representation

The final book on this story (4) was as good as the first as the author really captured your attention. The one thing that almost stopped me listening to this book was the fact they had a different narrator. She hadn’t listened to how Annie and Frederick had been portrayed throughout books 1-3. Annie went from a well spoken lady , in beautiful gowns, to sounding like an uneducated mill employee. Dumpy and lacking deportment she had learnt as a ladies maid. Frederick went from a well spoken mill owner to sounding like an uneducated crotchety old man. That disappointed me. But I listened to the whole book and was glad I did to find out the ending.

I changed my mind!

Having listened to the 4 previous books in the Gibson Family series, narrated by Anne Dover, I was disappointed and put out on discovering the last book had a different narrator. In the beginning, comparing her directly with Anne Dover, I thought the listener has missed out. However, I continued with the book (of course!), as I had grown so fond of the Gibson family members and enjoy Anna Jacob's extremely gifted storytelling. As time went on, and I grew used to Julia Franklin's voice, I was able to discard my previous prejudice. I discovered myself enjoying the story just as much and marvelling at Julia's talent for American, Irish and regional accents. Also male and female voices. It reminded me to judge people on their own merit and not compare them to others.
I also enjoyed the historical link to the American Civil war. When the war started affecting the raw cotton supply, but people were saying it will be over in a few months, I asked Alexa straight away about the dates. (April 1861 - April 18??). I won't spoil it for others when the war ended, but my reaction was: "Oh no!!!"
If you enjoy period drama, do yourself a favour and get this series. Do more things you enjoy. It's called self care.

Disappointing end

Having thoroughly enjoyed the 4 previous books, having to accommodate a change in narrator (and thus some of the character accents), I found the last instalment less pleasing. The switch in pronunciations Cian Gilcrest resonated throughout and the repeat plot, albeit differing slightly, made for a disappointing finale. If there is to be a 6th, focusing on Mark Gibson, I hope the original narrator of Ann Dover can return.

Too many inconsistencies with a new narrator

Oh dear! what a way to ruin a great set of books by having a new narrator for the last one, book 5. Characters one had grown to love sounded so wrong with this narrator for book 5 and you really have to persevere to finish the story. In addition, the pronunciation of a main character's name, Tian Gilchrist was completely different as if he had changed his name altogether. Finally, through book 2,3,4 we hear of Netherley cottage, the Cottage Annie bought and where her family live. So, why oh why does the name suddenly change to Netherley house cottage?! isn't that just a bit daft?

If a change in narrator is needed for what ever reason, at least get the basics right and follow pronunciations. I loved this set of books but to be hones, book 5 is a slog because of the Narrator not the story line itself.

Poor narrator

Having read all the Anna Jacobs books leading to this I needed to listen to the end. The narrator was not the same as previous books and I found her representation of many of the characters wanting. Annie’s voice was whinny instead of the usual confident authoritative voice of previous books. The male voices all sounded the same. I did not enjoy this book as much as the previous ones.

A satisfying conclusion

As with the previous 4 books in this series, I thoroughly enjoyed this last one. I felt that Anna Jacobs brought everything to a satisfying conclusion. However, it would have been much better if Audible had used the same narrator, Anne Dover, as the first 4 books.
The accents and a lot of the pronunciations were very different, and it was the worst attempt at a New York accent I'd ever heard.

Didn't want it to finish. I've read all the books. A bit of a gap in me know.

So annoyed!

All of this saga read by Anne Dover and then you have someone completely different reading the last one. Sounds absolutely horrible. Really disappointed!

Narration change

The narration was unfortunately changed for this last book from the previous in the series and made it very difficult to listen to.

Great final in the Gibson story

Enjoyed the final in this set of books but very disappointed that they changed the narrator. It took most of the book to get use to the change in the voice of the characters.

Great Story

why on earth you changed narrators for this last instalment is beyond me. I was so enjoying the characters and their distinctive voices then to listen to this one where they were completely different and no refinement for Annie was hugely disappointing . Also continuity was not followed . Overall a great series and loved the storyline , will listen to more from this author.

Narrator

Although I always enjoy as Anna Jacobs stories I find the narrators very disappointing. I do not see why the reader has to make voices sound like the character’s. I would prefer to have my own voices in my imagination . Please please try and get the stories read as they appear on the page. The inflection in the voices is not good, not necessary and really off putting.

The narration was very disappointing

I have loved the characters of this series which made me give this final book a go although the reviews are disappointing with reference to the narrator. Unfortunately my love of the characters was also lost with this narrator and I couldn’t bear to listen to it.

Great story, such a shame about the ascents

The story was great just disappointed in the accents , Anna,s other stories in this series were great and easy to listen to. However I wouldn't recommend listening to this due only to the teller.

The story great, but ruined by the narrator I wish Anne Dover had read this as she had with the rest of the series. I found Julie's voice irritating, particularly with the men's. Spoilt the story for me.
