Excellent follow up
After thoroughly enjoying the first Spellsmith and Carver volume, Magician's Rivalry, I wondered if the book would be a tough act to follow. Not at all, my concern was completely unfounded. H. L. Burke has written a whole new story in her sequel to the first book, with some surprises added. These young adult fantasy books have a small amount of mild romance, but this supports the plot, rather than dominating it. Magic powering an industrial society is a unique twist, which Burke writes very well. Looking forward to the last volume in the trilogy!

Book two in the snarky magicians trilogy
As someone who takes reading order seriously I must tell you to go find Magician's Rivalry and read that first.
Did you? Good now you are set.
Magician's Trial picks up shortly after the first book and deals with the political ramifications of a magic shortage.
This is by far the most "Steampunk" of Burke's gaslamp trilogy featuring a socially awkward inventor named Lotta who wants to solve the magic drought with machinery.
Our heroes, Auric and Jericho, get the dubious honor of trying to figure out who wants Lotta and them dead.
I love Lotta and really relate to her character. I also really enjoyed the steampunk elements, this would be a fun story to see turned into a movie, as so much of it would be visually interesting.
Since hollywood would just ruin it anyway, it's a good thing that narrator Bridger Conklin provided such an amazing performance. He reads beautifully, making every character distinct and every passage of description engaging.
