A good young adult fantasy book

This is a young adult book but I enjoyed it all the same. The prodigal son, Auric, comes home from school find his father, the Mater, has taken a student, Jericho. Jericho is threatened by the return of Auric. He didn't wan to lose his place with Auric's father. Jericho in infatuated with Auric's sister. Of course they had to band together to get the Master back. They venture into the Fey world and encounter many obstacles. The characters were well developed. The plot was well planned out. If you like spells and magic then this is the book for you. It was very enjoyable.

The narration was very good. The narrator brought the characters to life.

I received a free copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

Fantasy for younger readers

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

I must admit I expected more from this book. On the positive side, the idea behind the plot was interesting and the author's magic system was both innovative and it helped to create interesting plot situations. However, I found the twists in the story predictable and the character development both predictable and somewhat superficial. The greatest flaw, however, was that it felt like a series of short stories tacked together, as the heroes jumped from one situation to another.

This book would work best if target at younger readers, who might not yet be familiar with the tropes and conventions of fantasy. The lack of violence and sex also point at a younger audience.

I loved the narrator. His calm and soothing voice kept the story going and added to the fantastic and magical mood.

For Young Adult's

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would say yes to someone much younger than I.

Would you be willing to try another book from H. L. Burke? Why or why not?

Always open to try. This may not have been to my liking, but can say the same for some of my favorite authors.

What three words best describe Bridger Conklin’s voice?

I enjoyed his narration. And believe he'll do great in future readings.

Was Spellsmith & Carver: Magicians' Rivalry worth the listening time?

Not for me, but having said I would, I finished listening to end. One of the things Audible or who ever decides could do to improve choosing for me would be to have a notation in description that a book was for young adults.

Any additional comments?

As I said, this was not to my liking. I found it silly and juvenile at times, but then I'm old. Someone under 20 might find it great.

YA Fantasy

I liked this book more then I expected. There was something about it that had me listening to it. I thought the pace was good and it was intriguing. The narrator did a great job at voicing the characters.
I would highly recommend it. Suitable for all since there is no profanity or sexual content and a little violence but not graphic.

Interesting

I enjoyed the story and the characters for the most part. Narrator was a little less then I was hoped for, it sounds more like a read book then a performed book. Did fair job on keeping characters identify able. I received this book at no charge in exchange for an honest review. No sex or real violence so excellent for young audiences.

Rivals having to put rivalry aside

I would give this 4.5 stars if I could. Definitely an interesting story of a son whose relationship with his father had been strain coming home from school to discover another working with his father and also have a thing for his sister. Many arguments come up and he feels he made the wrong choice to come home until his father turns up missing and having to work with his rival. Main thing I would change is to make his sister a tad bit stronger there are times she comes out like a door mat and not because she feels she has to keep the peace between her brother and father other than that it was a very lovely book.

Fantastic YA Fantasy Adventure!

This is a fun, entertaining YA magical adventure. That means no graphic violence and no sex. I didn't miss either. I didn’t really care for Jericho at first, but I understood that he didn’t want to lose what he had worked so hard for just because the Master’s son returned. I really kind of felt that Auric had the high ground, mainly because Jericho was so unfriendly and rude. I started to feel more kindly towards Jerricho when he insisted on a level playing field and wanting to “win” his place fairly based on his skill and merit and was brave enough to admit that he was the one who first started training Rill. That the two rivals had to work together, and ended up fast friends really made the story. I would readily read the next book in the series, but I want to emphasize that this audiobook stands alone. Even if you stop listening after just this one, you will still have a satisfactory experience. There is a reasonable end to this part of the story. The story has a good plot and is well-written. The rivalry and snarky comments between Auric and Jericho are highly entertaining, and the story itself is an enjoyable action adventure. There is some danger and drama, but overall it’s a pretty low angst level.

The narration took a little getting used to. It seemed a little dry to me at first, but once I got into the story, it flowed, and I definitely had no trouble discerning between the different characters’ voices.

YA Fantasy, but not bad

I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

This was definitely geared towards a younger audience. The plot was interesting and I liked how the author built how the world's magic worked. This book seemed more like a series of episodes rather than a continuous novel. That isn't necessarily a compliant, but an observation. All in all, it was entertaining.

Refreshingly intricate story! A great read/listen!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book it starts out feeling like a very normal magic story and quickly morphs into a more complex thriller adventure story with magical elements.
I loved the interplay of the characters and how the relationships cement and develop between people. There is some very logical sensible progression of the characters but it is more of an awakening than development.

The story doesn't play out quite how you expect and there are enough twists and turns to keep you reading.

The performance is good with nice differentiation of characters throughout.

If you enjoy a magic based fantasy with more of a thriller adventure twist this is definitely a book for you.
