Publisher's Summary

On the planet of Discworld, phrases like 'there's a Death in the family' take on a whole new meaning.

Young Susan has always suspected that her Grandfather was different, as though all the time he spent riding a white horse and wielding a scythe weren't enough of a giveaway. Now that her worst fears have been confirmed, Susan learns that she's expected to take over the family business when she grows up, even though most people mistake her for the Tooth Fairy. But as attractive as Death can be to many people, Susan is drawn into something else: the exciting, addictive heavy beats of 'Music with Rocks In,' Discworld's latest dance craze.

Please note: This is a vintage recording. The audio quality may not be up to modern day standards.

Old audio

Old audio. You have to crank up the volume to hear the conversation. Not worth the buy. The story is good though.

Unacceptable audio quality

Any additional comments?

The publisher needs to remaster this. It sounds like a duplicate made by holding a tape recorder up to a speaker. The sound is atrocious and should not be made available for sale on this service.

Good story, bad recording

Very bad sound qualify, obvious that it's digitalized cassette audio. At one time here was a "side 3"- artefact remaining from the transfer.

Ahhh...

The double license reminder at the beginning suggestst this was "remastered" multiple times.. But most likely it is just annoying.
Of corse the rest is awesome, it's Terry Pratchett.

amazing book, ok-ish audio

damn shame and sloppy by audible to not have better audio quality, its slightly muffled but I enjoyed it all, playing it on higher speeds makes it slightly better

Audio seemed fine to me

Other reviewers have had issues with old/silent audio. I did not experience this issue. The audio volume sounds same as any other titles in my library, and the performance is clear.

Heavens, the audio quality...

Great book, fantastic narrator, bloody awful audio quality. What a shame. Even at full volume, it’s difficult to hear. Fuzzy at times. And you have to put up with things like “this side is over, please move onto the next file”.

Awful sound quality

Really poor sound quality, like it's copied from a scratched tape, and while it's obviously been through some digital noise reduction, it's still poor. But very good story, and I have nothing bad to say about the reader's performance, just a really cheap and poor job by the studio.

Living on borrowed Music

If you have never read the discword this isn't the book to start with; there are lots of establish story lines going on and you will be much happier starting with Mort.

For those who have read Mort and Reaper Man - you know all about Death and Susan.

This book is about the crowd, music and fame. Something which Pratchett - personal feel - falls a little short on. It's much better then Moving Pictures but somehow need seemed as neat to me as some of the other books.

Excellent story but ...

This is one of my all-time favourite books, and the reading is great too, but I find the sound quality disappointing. Still worth buying, but I'd be happy to invest in an updated recording.

Bit hard to hear

I found it a bit hard to hear at times, poor sound quality almost throughout. Quite a coincidence when it's a book with sound as a focus.

Great book - poor audio quality

What did you like best about Soul Music? What did you like least?

Pratchett read by Planer is great, but the audio quality in this is entirely muffled and it ruins the listening experience

Poorly copied from tape

A great performance ruined by lazy editing by audible staff. Long silences, random interjections of 'side three' etc and an additional copyright waring bang in the middle of the book ruins what should be one a delightful story.

Great as usual but . . .

The only drawback is the terrible sound quality. At some points the sound is tinny and echoey.

Music with Rocks in!

The characters immediately appealed and I was gripped to the story within the first five minutes. The further humanisation of Death our favourite anthropomorphic personification is amusing as he first drinks and then goes off to forget by joining the foreign legion. This interplay of new charecters and themes over familiar settings and some old favorites (such as CMOT Dibbler as music mogul) makes this another grin fest. I always reach for a Terry Pratchett book when I want to be thought provokingly amused and walk around smiling inanely while listening to the story on audio. Soul Music did not dissapoint. Only slight downside is that this recording seemed to lack audio quality - seemed a bit biscuit tinney and although I enjoy Nigel Planer's narration, I do prefer Stephen Briggs.

Genius storytelling

If you love 'music with rocks in it' this book will be a joy! Terry Pratchetts imagination never ceases to amaze me. He is a genius of a storyteller, and Nigel Planers narration brings life to all of the wonderful characters that are introduced in this story.I laughed alot and would thoroughly recommend.

Music With Rocks In!!!!

Another book filled with the humour and brilliance that we?ve come to expect for Terry Pratchett and Discworld. A story that, when you come down to it, is just ?Music With Rocks In?. The characters are plentiful and divers, and you find yourself loving and hating them by turns. If there was one slight let down it was the sound quality, but nothing unexpected from an older recording and it in no way detracts from the story.

Great story - awful sound quality

This is one of Terry Pratchett‘s masterpieces: a wonderfully inventive story and wonderful characters. The reader is a bit shaky on the Welsh words but overall it’s a great performance.
The recording seems to be copied from CDs. The sound quality is atrocious. At times it’s difficult to hear anything if you don’t crank up the volume. It‘s a shame... particularly since Audible charges full price for a very second rate product.

Superb

I love the subtle(?) humour in Terry Pratchett's books, and this one is no exception.

The sideways inclusion of hit songs of the sixties really made me chuckle, the story is a trifle potty, but brilliantly so.

Excellent listening, another one to add to the listen again list!

Nigel Planer can do Death's CAPITAL LETTER VOICE

he's just so great at narration and character voices. Soul Music is one of the Discworld greats.

this story is a slow tell, but worth it.

I could start and stop this story easily. There are weaves and dives with the story line all the way through. Unexpected tangents.

Great story and narration, particularly the constancy with so many different voices and noises.. Poor quality audio though sounded like a cassette from the 90s.
