Publisher's summary

The need to love and connect with others creates intimacy, but it also creates many difficulties, even failure. But Thomas Moore emphasizes that if you are willing to live through these difficulties, your life is enriched and the soul thrives. "Soul-intimacy" can be cultivated in many ways, even in letter-writing and conversations. It can be deepened through sexuality and jealousy, relationships that have gone stale, and even the pain of endings. Moore also investigates the possibility of soulful community in society and among nations, citing among others Emily Dickinson, Black Elk, and Sufi poets. Everyone who was touched by Care of the Soul will find this work a continuation of Moore's inspirational insights on human relationships.

A timely, ageless work

There's nothing else in the universe of published works quite like it. Rollicking and incisive!

Moore encourages the reader to explore the soul

I am a fan and “student” of Thomas Moore, a deep, prolific writer and lover - of all that is spiritually practical and nourishing! In his book, Soul Mates, Moore encourages the reader to explore the mysterious and unfathomable depths of our human soul. The soul exists paradoxically in relation to relationships, and varying according to the individual. We long for our solitude, and we long for love and attachment. Intimacy is not for the faint of heart, and through this venture, we are encouraged by Moore to tackle the challenge, and to delve into the language of your soul. You may be so called to dance along with, and dine with, the characters in the mythology of Jungian and Grecian archetypes, and perhaps even become a new-found friend to yourself. Through this journey, you may even be tempted to dance in the light with all of your shadows, and pause long enough to hear your soul speak its first words to you…. I highly recommend this book, and if you are seeking your soulmate, I hope that you develop a friendship with your soul, strong and clear enough, to draw this person into your life.

Old Fashioned Ideals Ruin An Interesting Message

It has some interesting points but some surprisingly old fashioned ideas about sex, love and a random disturbing homophobic statement.

big disappointment

Perhaps it's the abridgement, but anything Moore says here has been better said or written by him elsewhere.

Moore's "Monk Who Dwells in Everyday Life" is one of my favorite audiobooks. Even though in print it was a series of short reflections, the text and Moore's soothing voice combined to make great listening and I expected a similar listen here - but I found "Soul Mates" just plain abrupt and annoying - not to mention his discussion of pornography just plain puzzling - there must have been a richer context in the unabridged book.

Download instead "Dark Night of the Soul" for similar (but better) content than "Soul Mates". Moore's "Care of the Soul" is also available from Audible, but I found the narration very dull.

Warning: Don't gift this to a soul mate unless you've listened first -- she/he might think you're planning an affair to enlarge YOUR soul, from listening to some of these anecdotes!
