The Altar

Marianne accepts her mother’s invitation to a lake house retreat with the sorority her mother has belonged to for over forty years. They reach the large lake house, where they are being watched.

Lucas, a laid-off journalist looking for something to help his career, notices new arrivals at the house who look like royalty.

Marianne finds refuge in the wine cellar. Not only is there a man snooping around the basement, but the cellar is not filled with wine. They are both in shock when Marianne switches on the lights: the cellar contains a sacrificial altar that looks ready for an offering. Afraid that Lucas might become a sacrifice, Marianne sneaks him into her room until she decides what to do.

They find proof of the sorority’s involvement in a local crime from over thirty-five years ago. Marianne decides to let Lucas go if he swears to keep the story a secret, but he refuses to leave.

Lucas wakes up tied to a chair in the basement, wrongly assuming that he is about to become an offering. Marianne runs to the basement just in time to see the ritual start, but it is not what she expected.

A granny informs Lucas that, a terrible curse will fall upon him if the women he had just blessed don’t conceive by the following year.

He secretly hopes that they will meet again.
