Publisher's summary

From the award-winning author of the Dreamland series comes a new dark romantic fantasy about a young woman finding hope in her powers of destruction.

The Thief Kingdom is a place hidden within the world of Aadilor. Many whisper of its existence, but few have found this place, where magic and pleasure abound. There, the mysterious Thief King reigns supreme with the help of the Mousai, a trio of revered and feared sorceresses.

Larkyra Bassette may be the youngest of the Mousai, but when she sings her voice has the power to slay monsters. When it’s discovered the Duke of Lachlan is siphoning a poisonous drug from the Thief Kingdom and using it to abuse his tenants, Larkyra is offered her first solo mission to stop the duke. Eager to prove herself, Larkyra accepts by posing as the duke’s potential bride. But her plans grow complicated when she finds herself drawn to Lord Darius Mekenna, Lachlan’s rightful heir. Soon she suspects Darius has his own motivations for ridding Lachlan of the corrupt duke. Larkyra and Darius must learn to trust each other if there is to be any hope of saving the people of Lachlan - and themselves.

Welcome to the world of Aadilor, where lords and ladies can be murderers and thieves, and the most alluring notes are often the deadliest. Dare to listen?

Enjoyed it a lot

Closed all the boxes of fantasy romance for me. Especially liked world building and magic descriptions.

Interesting Fantasy World

This was my first read of E. J. Mellow. I have now read the 2nd book and awaiting the 3rd. The contrast between good and bad had a unique twist. Implying that neither was right or wrong; but that even a good motivation can turn sore and bad.
The characters were real and yet possessed of superpowers of an ornate nature. The book held me with pauses of character mixed with tidbits of fantasy, like embellishments to your person.

Loved the story, didn’t enjoy the narration

The story was great - I enjoyed the adventure way more than the love story (love story lacked depth and texture). The story had many unexpected twists and turns and I loved the fiery personalities of the sisters and their relationship with each other. With a better narrator, I would have bought the trilogy.

couldn't finish

I got about 20 chapters in, fully emerged in the story, when I had to quit. The female narration is just too hard for me, personally. So monotone, so unaffected. I just couldn't finish.

Really enjoyed listening to this, I found both narrators pleasant to listen to. Hope the narrator(s) for the second book are just as good!

loved it

great world building, characters, and overall story. the narrator annoyed me a couple times but was great 99.9% of the time so I didn't dock any points. if you love fantasy and slow-burn romance, you'll enjoy this book.

I need more!

I accidentally listened to the first two books in the series out of order, but it didn’t do anything to diminish my understanding of the world that was built. Each one contained multitudes of scenarios that check off the trope boxes for me. Magic, forbidden love, spying, etc., it has it all! I am so glad I found this series. The narrators are brilliant at making the characters come to life, and the interconnected books tie everything together. Time for me to go read the third book!
