NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • An official Oprah Winfrey’s “The Books That Help Me Through” selection • The acclaimed Nobel Prize winner transfigures the coming-of-age story with this brilliantly imagined novel. Includes a new foreword by the author.

Milkman Dead was born shortly after a neighborhood eccentric hurled himself off a rooftop in a vain attempt at flight. For the rest of his life he, too, will be trying to fly. As Morrison follows Milkman from his rustbelt city to the place of his family’s origins, she introduces an entire cast of strivers and seeresses, liars and assassins, the inhabitants of a fully realized Black world.

“Morrison moves easily in and out of the lives and thoughts of her characters, luxuriating in the diversity of circumstances and personality, and revelling in the sound of their voices and of her own, which echoes and elaborates theirs.” —The New Yorker

This is the fourth book of Morrison's I've read or listened to. I've been working my way through a list of books for a number of years and have absolutely dreaded this one because I did not enjoy the previous three.

First, let me say that Morrison's performance in this unabridged version, while not up to the standards of professional voice actors, is head and shoulders above her whispered reading of Beloved. I love the voice she adopted for the main character.

The story is not unlike her other books. Oddball characters who don't fit into black society, weird paranormal plotlines, and interest in generational narratives. While I didn't enjoy those other stories (Beloved, Sula, and the Bluest Eye), this one really struck a cord.

The story is thoroughly engaging and challenging. If you've struggled with her other books and are a little leary, I recommend giving this one a chance.

Not a Morrison fan. Love this one.

There’s too much to say about this book, about the way Morrison wrote it. She touches everything in its pages, fearlessly. Love and hate. Birth and murder. Class and race and Michigan and the South. And she spares not a word, and takes her time, and does not lie to help the medicine go down. Why did I wait so long to read it?

There are other reviews complaining about the author narrating the book, which in my opinion is a garbage opinion.

The story is wonderful and enhanced by her voice, tone, and cadence.

Wonderful story

loved it. I had to really pay attention to what was going on with milkman and his mother relationship as well as his cousin. That was wild for me to process.

What an honor to hear the author read the work. I read reviews halfway through listening to the book, and I was astonished at the negative responses. To each there own, I’ll allow, and I think we have become narrow and somewhat coddled in our entertainment. Let an old wise woman tell you a story.

I listened in a relatively quiet environment.

I could listen to her read any story to me and love it. She is such a legend and having the author read their story is just icing on the cake.

I listen to this story on three separate occasions, often rewinding to digest what the author‘s intent was. It became a personal journey for me, which helped me to better understand the importance of knowing from whence you came. Often times, enslaved black Americans are confused Because of a deliberate intention by the enslavers to deny one’s own humanity!

Ms. Morrison’s Deas

A story we all need to enfold, characters we need to begin to understand where we’ve been as a culture, a collective known as Americans. Broader still, this story penetrates across generations with and without kin.

Essential

Toni Morrison is an AMAZING writer and narrator. This book lead me to read the bible. I only wish I could have spoken with her to ask about the symbolism of the biblical names.

OUSTANDING STORY

Loved Toni Morrison telling the story. I first read this novel in 1987 and then went on a Toni Morrison bender. It may be time to revisit all of those fantastic books - but this time it will be via Audible.

Such Beautiful Literature!
