Welcome Home

Somewhere Beyond the Sea by TJ Klune is the continuation of The House in the Cerulean Sea, told from Arthur’s POV. TJ’s talk on tour is, as he said, queer wrath. If THitCS is a warm hug, SBtS is a protest rally. It’s only the following year, but the children have grown in their confidence, and Arthur runs out of fu¢ks to give. It is beautiful. And ragey. And it filled my Mama Bear heart with joy for the future of our kids. To be fair, I started crying at the dedication, and stopped with the epilogue. I also laughed some, growled some, and sighed some. As TJ said in his insta reel on release day, “Welcome home.”

Daniel Henning elevated an already amazing story that much higher with his narration. And the acknowledgements were read by TJ himself, so I also cried there. I lied when I said I stopped crying with the epilogue. Oops.

Worth the wait

Just what we need right now in a time of such turmoil: a champion. Arthur Parnassus for President!

Incredible writing and performance

The story is phenomenal in and of itself but the narrator makes me feel some of the scenes so intensely, he’s just remarkable.

Just finished, and wiping the tears from my eyes. A very touching and sweet story of inclusion and acceptance and love and made me laugh out loud while listening at work. Thank you, TJ, for this effort of love.

A Solid Sequel

Not as perfect as the first book (the laser focus on one character’s journey was more impactful for me in that one) but still great overall. The voice actor goes a bit overboard with the performance in a few of the narration scenes imo but I still enjoy him and his distinct characters

Parent and Ally Goals

Having hope can be painful and heavy. Having hope can sometimes lead to the most searing moments of despair. Love. Laughter. Those little things that bring us joy. Those moments we have to hold to our goodness despite failure, rage, injustice, SMUG pride on the other side… Klune captures it all. As a parent with a burning phoenix inside I relate so hard to Arthur. As a human cloaked in the safety of privilege I understand Linus’ struggles and the pain that comes with them. I love seeing Lucy, a child with big feelings and power in his hands, be loved. It shows me how I want to love. I shook with rage at the callous, hateful, slimy words spewed by those in power. I cried for the pain David goes through. I laughed out loud at Chauncey’s irascible HIMness. This family shows me a world I want to live in, to fight for, to be brave for. “Don’t you wish you were here?” Yes, I do.

We NEED these characters in the world.

When the second book is even better than the first and the first was DELIGHTFUL?? You know it’s good. I absolutely loved these sweet characters. In a time of so much hate in the world, this is an important story of real life and real love.

Wonderful and timely

It was the healing read I needed right now. Maybe even better than the first book.
