Publisher's summary

Anders Canyon is an unassuming little town where big things are afoot.

As a science fiction writer, Francis does a lot of strange research on the internet, but he’s not sure he’s ever had to look up “I can turn into a dog.” It looks like his neighbor crush might be facing the same kind of transformation, but who can he trust when confessing the truth might get him put in a padded room, with or without a shock collar around his neck?

A warning not to drink the local water is just the start of Julia’s trouble, but the cases that are starting to show up at her little clinic don’t match the symptoms of heavy metal poisoning, and whatever this affliction is...it’s clearly spreading.

On top of that, snoopy agents who claim to be with the EPA are asking her questions, and her hot next door neighbor is suddenly incredibly hot...and Julia never sees him at the same time as his new dog.

Something in the Water is a short, steamy shifter listen that stands alone, with a complete emotional arc and satisfying ending, launching a crunchy mystery in a little town with lots of secrets....

This story was originally published in the anthology New Year, New Boo (2021, now out of print).

Nice take on Shifter PNR

Fun short story. Birch needs to write some full length novels in this universe. It would be fun to see there's characters grow.

intriguing

This is a cute short intriguing story. The main characters are engaging and somebody I'd like to meet. I'd enjoy following along for more of their story. I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this and am giving an honest review. The narrator did a good job bringing it to life.

Become your own pet

Such a cute story. Some really funny lines. Like trying to get 4 legs to work at the same time. (something like that) calling out nipples for no reason. the itchy munchies! I really enjoyed the characters. I thought the male voice could have had a little more enthusiasm in parts. He was too serious for some of the humorous lines. the book also needed divided into chapters as it was one solid chapter. Overall I liked it a lot.

Need more

i loved the book but I want to know more. Did the whole town turn into shifters? Did the "agents" take people away? There has to be more to the story. Please continue it.

A fun listen.

it's a kind of cute take on shifters. it's a fun, sweet listen. there is an explicit sex scene. I love Elva Birch's books for the fun reading they are.

What is going on? The are changes happening.

This is a fun short story that interduces us to a concept that completely changes what think you know about shifters. This imaginative take on the concept had me looking for more information and hoping that the next book has it.
Really hopefully the series will be all I am hoping for.
The following contains SPOILERS!!!

This book 1 is about Francis and Julia. Francis is a Sifi writer and Julia is a doctor at the local clinic.
We start with Julia coming home to find a dog in her driveway. Next she finds a warning on the door that there is something wrong with the water. What will tomorrow be like?
We then learn that it was not just some dog. We learn it is Francis and he is not sure what is happening.
Next we go with Julia to the clinic and listen to the weird symptoms others are experiencing. Toward the end of the day 2 "agents" come in looking for people having problems due to the "water issues".

What happens next and how it ends makes me hope for several more stories with more details as we go.

A unique perspective on shifters!

I liked this quite a bit!

Pros: The narration was smooth, the voices fit the characters and the storyline was a neat perspective on how the main characters became shifters.

Cons: I felt it was a bit.. unfinished. The ending came up suddenly, not even a cliffhanger, and my questions about the story were definitely not answered! I can only hope there are more parts to this so that those questions do get resolved!

Would I read/listen again: Yes I would. I am a huge fan of paranormal stories!
