Publisher's summary

Jeffery Deaver, "the master of manipulation" (Associated Press) and "the most creative, skilled and intriguing thriller writer in the world" (Daily Telegraph, UK), returns with the new, long-awaited Kathryn Dance thriller.

A tragedy occurs at a small concert venue on the Monterey Peninsula. Cries of "fire" are raised, and, panicked, people run for the doors only to find them blocked. A half dozen people die, and others are seriously injured. But it was the panic and the stampede that killed; there was no fire.

Kathryn Dance - a brilliant California Bureau of Investigation agent and body-language expert - discovers that the stampede was caused intentionally and that the perpetrator, a man obsessed with turning people's own fears and greed into weapons, has more attacks planned. She and her team must race against the clock to find where he will strike next before more innocents die.

Critic reviews

"Narrator January LaVoy excels in her timing, pacing, and sensitivity to the myriad subtleties in the story. She delivers children's voices of both genders extraordinarily well, and the wide array of adult characters allows ample scope for her ability to develop multiple voices for the complex dialogue.... LaVoy is so good as the lead that listeners will want her to be the voice of Kathryn Dance in all future publications." ( AudioFile)

Weak

Disappointed. Okay for a mystery/thriller, but not one by Deaver. Some of the subplots seemed unnecessary.

Satisfying to say the least

I didn't anticipate the twists and turns and the unexpected in this novel. It was engaging and I never would have guessed any of the outcomes. Devo the way I like him. The narrator was excellent.

Brilliant twists and turns

If you could sum up Solitude Creek in three words, what would they be?

Just when you think you can predict what will be next, another twist gets thrown in. This one takes so many, you have to pay attention to every word. Nothing turns out the way you think it will. The final twist will really leave you hanging.

Great read!

Like all of Deaver 's books are suspenseful, engaging, and surprising - I am lousy at figuring out what's going to happen! This book was no exception. Characters were well fleshed out and remained true, the story had an unexpected twist, and came to a satisfying conclusion. I was even struck by how well it was read - the narrator did a great job of voicing all characters regardless of gender or age.

Self Sacrifice and Finding Your Path

Would you listen to Solitude Creek again? Why?
yes, as I missed a lot the first time around. Note: must use new 1.25x speed to get author's intent.
I liked the characters, since I have jumped into this series at #4, I didn't see the development of the male leads with heroine if in other books. This could have used a bit stronger dialogue to ensure the drama. Ending was a WOW, did not see it coming.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Solitude Creek?
Couple of scenes kept me on edge, Bowlings' especially. I loved Michael O’Neils character and
Without Ms LaVoy reading #1-3, not interested in going back, but will get #5 if she reads it.

Have you listened to any of January LaVoy’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes, a great reader, see Harlan Corban and Marcia Clarks stories read by Ms LaVoy.
I agree with Wayne, author should use Ms LaVoy for Kathryn as she has it spot on. Great childrens voices, and her male voice is great.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
yes, as there were 3 scenarios going on and nicely linked together, which I missed the first time around. This has graphic descriptions of fear but no gore or horror.

Good story, but

way too much filler description of rooms, and some action events went on and on

Amazingly complex

This story has layer upon layer of things going on. This investigator is not looking into one mystery, she's solving multiple issues at the same time. Some are cross over a little, most not. I like this author.
