Publisher's Summary

Social Security: finally simplified for the everyday person and explained in laymen's terms. This book breaks down Social Security so simply that you'll know exactly how to maximize your benefits for life!

Disability and retirement can be very frightening words for someone who does not have a firm grasp on their finances. Having to provide for yourself and your family during those times always becomes paramount.

If you don't understand how Social Security works, you could be missing out on huge benefits.

You hear about Social Security on the news and in the paper all time, but you don't understand how it really works. With so much attention on Social Security in recent years, no matter your age, you realize its importance. It's time you fully understand what Social Security is, how it works, and what it means for you. No other book is going to teach you about Social Security from the ground up - discussing the history of this social insurance system, how it is funded and dispersed, and how to get your fair share!

Social Security currently provides benefits to over 50 million people every month in the United States. That means that in one in four households, someone receives Social Security benefits in one form or another. Contrary to what politicians might state, Social Security is not going anywhere in the foreseeable future. Social Security benefits represent a significant portion of the entire economy and that portion is only expected to grow.

For many Americans, Social Security income will provide the majority of their retirement income. Even those who've cultivated other sources of retirement income over the years will still rely on Social Security as a significant pillar of their greater retirement strategies. You need to understand social security.

You need to know this information

Would you consider the audio edition of Social Security Simplified to be better than the print version?

Yes I personally listened to the book twice to make sure I didn't miss any of the important information.

What does Amy Barron Smolinski bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She has a very clear and easy to listen to voice.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Truthfully I was shocked at how easy it would be to be financially harmed without the right amount of information. The normal person just goes into social security and expects them to tell them everything they need to know. But what if that person is not properly trained or just doesn't care. That is where you need to know before walking in to that office to sign up for your benefits first. We have all worked hard for retirement and that is not the time to make mistakes that would financially harm your monthly benefit for the rest of your life.

Any additional comments?

This is a book that is full of information that only an expect can give you. I know that I was surprised several times with some of the information that they have collected. The regular everyday person could never gather half of it. Even if you did a search of the internet for hours. They have put it all together for us in this one audio book and included a pdf to make it even simply for you to understand. So you can maximize your social security befits. For an audio that costs under 10 dollars is could save you hundreds of dollars in retirement benefits monthly. I would put this on my must have list of audio books.

Information Packed

This book was informative and easy to understand. The political and philosophical discussion of the proposed future of Social Security was an added bonus, and gave context to the book as a whole.

Good overall intro

I liked that besides just telling about the nuts & bolts of SS, the book introduces different approaches to solve the dying funds' problem.

Complex Topic - Listen to it twice...

This title is excellent overview given the complexity of the topic, the rules/laws governing Social Security and what one must do approaching retirement age to maximize benefits earned and owed by the government. As this topic and associated issues are very complex, suggest that listeners play it 2-3 times (or perhaps review topics of interest in specific chapters) to gain further insight on a particular issue.

Useful overviews of topics like Social Security aren't easy to produce - however, these folks did it, including the excellent narrator.

Comprehensive explanation

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this book to anyone who in interested in learning about social security or is nearing the age of 65. I knew nothing about it before, and found this book to be very informative and descriptive.

Any additional comments?

While much of this information may be available through google searches, I appreciated that it was all pulled together and in the audible format so that I was able to listen to this while driving to and from work. I found the speaker pleasant and easy to listen to. The PDF accompaniment would be good for those turning 65 soon so that they can highlight key points while listening, or if they wanted to look over a certain section (like chapter 3 detailing sections A-D) to make sure they pick the option that is best for them.

(This) Knowledge is power!!!

Now, this was awesome. Everything you need to know about social security. Knowledge is power and with this information, you’ll have power. This audiobook made me realize that without a lot of this information, someone can be at a financial disadvantage. This way, the reader/audience doesn’t need to depend on the workers at the Social Security office to supply information, which they (the employees there) may or may not know.

This is not to be missed. You need this information.

I received a free copy of this audiobook from the author in exchange for an unbiased review.
