Publisher's Summary

We all saw it at once. Half a dozen voices screamed, 'Grenade!' simultaneously. Then everything went into slow motion. The grenade took an age to travel through its 20 metre arc. A dark, small oval-shaped package of misery the size of a peach....

April 2004: Dan Mills and his platoon of snipers flew into Southern Iraq, part of an infantry battalion sent to win hearts and minds. They were soon fighting for their lives.

Back home we were told they were peacekeeping. But there was no peace to keep. Because within days of arriving in theatre, Mills and his men were caught up in the longest, most sustained firefight British troops had faced for over 50 years.

This awe-inspiring account tells of total war in throat-burning winds and 50-degree heat, blasted by mortars and surrounded by heavily armed militias. For six months they fought alone: isolated, besieged and under constant enemy fire. Their heroic stand was a modern-day Rorke's Drift.

Sniper Platoon Under Siege in Iraq

Fast paced, and plenty of action. I expected more sniping content, given the title. Not for virgin ears, as the profanity is part of the performance, and is done as only the Brits can do it. I enjoyed the Epilogue, where the author gives an update on the members of the platoon.

Amazing story that keeps building

Extremely well written and narrated. As a true story i did not know where this was going and i kept expecting that the action would drop off. Little did i realize how far the action would continue to build. It was upsetting to think that these guys did not have 50 caliber rifles and extensive drone support, but the descriptions of the air support they did occasionally enjoyed was thoroughly exciting. This is a must read/listen book

Cracking listen!

having been to Iraq on challenger 2 I can relate to this book. I knew the cimic story already but brilliant to hear it first hand. My only issue was with the way he said "gimpy" it's pronounced as "jimpy" unless PWRR called it that I don't know but we knew it as "jimpy" still a top book!

Let down by the narrator

The is an excellent front line memoir however I can’t help but feel this audio book is let down by the choice of narrator. It’s like listening to a teenage boy talk about combat experiences, it just doesn’t work. I stopped listening after the first chapter. Such a shame.

Interesting, but not a pleasant listen

Interesting, but not a pleasant listen, nor a pleasant man. I suppose some of this is either required or desirable in a soldier. But it certainly doesn't make for an uplifting listen or read., not for me at least.

Interesting, but some problems

Overall this is a good listen. It gives an insight into the daily life of soldiers and specifically snipers in the British army. It’s not all about battle and fighting (which granted might have become a little wearing)

it reflects the reality that fighting is often short sharp and frenzied and is over as quickly as it begins, and the rest of the time soldiers must keep themselves sane during long periods of downtime and waiting with often dull routine.

The narration is appropriate and listenable - he sounds like one might expect a soldier to sound. Some of the impressions of American accents weren’t great but again, sounds like a soldier trying to do it so comes across appropriately.

Personally I would have preferred the omission of some of the stories that aren’t related to sniping and combat because that’s really what I wanted to find out more about. Perhaps more about the training and technical aspects and how to think and act like a sniper would have been good. A few times I did get the impression that I was listening to a silly boy chuckling about his japes with his mates rather than a serious sniper. It was mildly embarrassing and more than a little cringe inducing, but to be fair that could have been down to the editing of the book and inflection lost in translation between the author and the narrator.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great book but it does feel a bit like a young man peacocking a lot of the time and it felt like 30% of it is filler to pack out enough pages.

Worth investigating if you’re specifically into military subjects and would like to see how snipers in the British army operate in the field and overarching impression of how they think and operate as a group of people, but not so much about the technical aspects of fighting and combat. Still, worthy of investigation.

Great book TERRIBLE NARRATION

The story was good. descriptions good BUT possibly the WORST narration ever. Poor accents, terrible expression, tries too hard. Just BAD BAD BAD. Totally ruined a good book. will avoid this reader in future, however good the book is.

Great story, well told.

Probably the audiobook I've most enjoyed so far.
I'd never really known the story before so didn't know what to expect. But was pleasantly surprised.

Boys own

A well told story. It puts you on the streets, the top of the buildings with the guys. What an amazing story of courage and determination.
One of the best battle stories I have read.

Great authentic no frills, non-stop action.

Great action told in a no frills honest account of a platoon and in particular it's platoon commanders initiation into battle.... and not any old battle. A seige that pushed these soldiers to the absolute limit of courage, endurance and resourcefulness.
Great story and well narrated.

Loved the book and liked the audiobook more

Incredible read, but the audiobook brought it to life. I enjoyed the first person accounts and soldiers humour throughtout which really connected the listener to the boys on the ground.

Loved it.

It's not strictly a sniper story but more an account of a very important modern day battle against Jehad that involves snipers. It is still an awesome action book with typical British humor thrown in and gives a great insight on the front line in the Middle East.
