Publisher's summary
I am Mercedes Athena Thompson Hauptman. My only 'superpowers' are that I turn into a 35-pound coyote and fix Volkswagens. But I have friends in odd places and a pack of werewolves at my back. It looks like I'm going to need them.
Centuries ago, the fae dwelt in Underhill. When they were cast out, they left behind their great castles, troves of magical artefacts...and their prisoners. Without the fae to mind them, those creatures roamed freely through Underhill wreaking havoc. Only the deadliest survived.
Now one of those prisoners has escaped. It can look like any creature it chooses and if it bites you, it controls you. It lives for chaos and destruction and can make you do anything - even kill the person you love the most. Now it is here, in the Tri-Cities. In my territory.
It won't - can't - remain. Not if I have anything to say about it.
Mercy Thompson returns in another thrilling instalment from number one New York Times best-selling author Patricia Briggs.

Great listen.
Smoke Bitten is a contemplative book, I enjoyed diving back into Mercy’s universe, resolving some things and exploring others.
The ending gives a happy surprise and confirmation that all is well for now...

Excellent as ever...
This is first and foremost a love story. Yes the escaped fae talked of in the synopsis is part of the story, but there are two other strong strands to this book, and while there is danger and battles and injuries (my how Mercy gets battered, in every book), what made this different, and really enjoyable for me, was the love story - it's not schmaltzy or girly - this is a grim determination to stand and fight for what you want, and in this case, it's the person you love.
There's are inner monologues from Mercy, sometimes at times of high intensity when I'm thinking, just get on with it girl, enough with the introspection, there's bits and bobs of input from some of the favourites plus a few who haven't featured much before, but this a very much Mercy's show, there's a Wulf issue that goes nowhere, and after the revelations about Sherwood in the last book I was hoping for more on him, but he's not around - but overall I very much enjoyed this.
Brilliantly read as always.

As good as I had hoped
The Mercy Thompson series is one of the very best in this genre - something I realised having been scratching around some of the others and most of them are not as good. Here we have another attack on Mercy and her friends and its as gripping as always. Lorelei King is just the perfect narrator. Fortunately she is back narrating on her own which is much better. If you like the Mercy books you will like this one shame we have to wait for Particia to write another one now

Amazing
Every time I listen to/read another Mercy book I am more amazed by Patricia Briggs and her story telling abilities. Every book is so different then the last yet somehow connect to the last in such a way that you don’t need to have read any other book to be able to just jump into a a series midway. This book had so many bad guys all wanting something different. All in all 5 stars just were not enough but were all I could give.

For me, not quite as good as usual
I found it difficult to keep track of who was who in this one. There seemed to be members of the pack that I don’t recall hearing of in earlier books. I found myself constantly wondering whether so-and-so was a pack member, one of their families, or one of the enemy pack. I needed a cheat sheet!
The other problem for me was that so much of the book took place inside Mercy’s head, meaning less interaction with other characters.
Of course it may be just how I am at the moment - too stressed to concentrate properly. I’ll see how it goes next time I listen.

I found every excuse under the sun to find a quiet place and listen to this story. It keeps the pace really well and was hard to find a point to stop. I can't wait for the next, this series has not let me down.

Keep you guessing until the end...
Patricia has mastered the art of keeping you guessing until the very end; so many twists and turns in this installment of the Mercy Thompson Series that you will be on the edge of your seat for the whole story. I can't say much more other than I simply loved it.
My only quip is that I adore Wolf and Stephan as characters and I would like to see more of them. I feel that the wolf pack and her mate have had a lot of page time (so to speak) and I am looking forward to seeing more of the other characters in future works.

jeez, this book was good. I'm a huge fan of Stefan and I love the little bits of him in any book. I also love Wolf and loved having more of him in this book, even though it was odd and mysterious. can't wait to see what happens going forward.
The whole story was great though.

Is it me, or is this Mercy book a lil’ below par?
I felt like the fae bargaining was too complicated & expositional. And the secondary ‘climax’ ended too quickly. ALWAYS love Lorelei’s performance though🙌🏽

well read!
Patricia writes some of the best relationship dialogue. I love how her characters work on good communication with each other. this book explores what happens when communication errodes. yet somehow, Patricia still writes meaningful, funny, and realistic lines for her characters. love it!

The Beast had Belle. Killian Black has me. How I got here doesn’t matter, even though he says it does. Says it was my choice. He doesn’t get it, though. It wasn’t ever a choice for me. And now, he’s changing the rules. The agreement was one month. For 30 days, I’d be his. He’s no longer satisfied with my body alone, though. He wants my soul, too. Wants every part of me. And even though I can pretend I’m safe when I lie beneath him, this man does something to me. Something wicked. A thing that will break me.
