Publisher's summary

FBI Special Agent Anna Turnipseed, a Modoc Indian from California, and Bureau of Indian Affairs Investigator Emmett Parker, a Comanche from Oklahoma, are a team, sent by the Feds wherever there are problems in tribal territory.

This assignment takes them to upstate New York where Brenda Two Kettles, an elder of the Oneida tribe, was found dead in a cornfield, every major bone in her body shattered. She seems to have fallen from the sky, like Sky Woman of the Oneida creation myth. When Anna and Emmett discover that Brenda was the center of a bitter land dispute between Indians and whites, they are sure she was murdered. Their investigation brings them face to face with the dangers of race war, and soon their own lives depend on Anna's instincts and her ability to see the line where myth and reality come together.

Intersting

I have long enjoyed the Tony Hillerman mysteries with two tribal police officers as the main characters and history and spiritual aspects of the Navaho mixed in. I picked this book based on an earlier review indicating a similar topic. This is a cleverly crafted mystery that again is set in "Indian Country" - that's what the characters call it, I'm not just be politically incorrect. I greatly enjoy this added element to the mystery, which itself is well plotted. The characters are well drawn and I found myself interested in learning more about them. I am sorry that there aren't any more available through Audible.

Good Book, Great Narration

This is a good mystery made better by Dick Hill. The murder method was a total surprise. The author didn't give away the villian prematurely, and I sure didn't guess it beforehand. Dick Hill's differentiation of the characters was excellent and I was really impressed by his pronunciation of Native words. There was a lot going on in this book and it was confusing at times, but all in all I would recommend it.

Negative 5 stars, Narrator is horrible!

This is the 4th book by Kirk Mitchell. I have listened to the first 3. Why they chose to randomly use another person for this one book to narrate i will never know. It was a horrible decision. I am 4 hrs into this book, and i don't think i can continue. the narrator is not just different, he's is horrible for single narrator reads with multiple voices. the main character voices do not even close to remain consistent. It's Bad, like your drunkest friend trying to do voices at a party bad. Skip this book, and go to the next one in the series.

I feel bad writing this when it comes to the author. I am a fan, but this is so inconsistent vocaly i would rather purchase the book and read it. The narrator is ruining the story.

Good story, Awful narration.

After listening to Stefan Rudniki read the first three books in this series with such depth and strength, Dick Hill's narration was an unpleasant surprise. Giving Emmet Parker a southern drawl was ill-advised and distracting, and changing the tone from deep baritone to tenor even worse. In fact, since I enjoy generally enjoy Kirk Mitchell's explorations into the Native American cultures involved with his stories ( somewhat lacking with this novel), I purchased the book in Kindle form so I could read it, rather than listen to HIll's annoying voice.

Move over Tony Hillerman

Just a bit to the side......Kirk Mitchell writes about all Native American tribes, not just the Navaho, as does Tony Hillerman. He does it well. He can't replace Hillerman for me but he certainly will keep me busy until the next Hillerman book comes out.

The wrong narrator can ruin a great book.

Honestly, I cant tell you if this was a good book or not. The others that go along with it have been terrific but I barely made it through this one.

One of the best in the series

Emmett Parker and Anna Turnipseed are back to solve another murder mystery centered around native American concerns and sprinkled with a good amount of folklore and a bit of sexual tension spread between the two detectives. This is one of my favorites in the series.

The narrator, Dick Hill, also does a good job bringing the book to life.

Author Has Lost Me As a Listener 🙄

This is the fourth book in a series, that up until this one, I have loved. I stuck with this one until the end, but as it progressed, I kept getting a bad feeling about it. The degusting details of what the young boy endured at the hands of "white nana" was sickening, and should never have been described. I don't believe it was pertinent to Indian culture, this story or anything else, but just used as sensationalism. The end of the third book led listeners/readers to believe that the relationship between Emmett and Anna was progressing, but nothing was further from the truth. This book is almost 14 hours long and it goes round and round, finally ending in a way that is truly no ending at all. I won't get the next/last one in the series. Its almost as if someone else wrote this one. 😪
