Critic reviews

  • Audie Award Nominee - Judges' Award for Best Paranormal Audiobook, 2011

"A new, strongly unique voice in the dark fantasy genre." (Kim Harrison)

"Hunter's very professionally executed, tasty blend of dark fantasy, mystery, and romance should please fans of all three genres." ( Booklist)
"Khristine Hvam portrays Jane with an adventurous-sounding voice edged with a twang.... Hvam’s voices for the Louisiana locals whom Jane learns to love and respect.... augment an intriguing story with hints of Native American mysticism." ( AudioFile)

Fantastic beginning of a new series!

I wasn't sure about this book at first. I am a huge fan of Patricia Briggs, and I was worried about it being too close. This story is entirely different, and the characters are fantastic. My favorite part is the reader though! Not all audiobooks are equal, but this one is amazing. The reader is perfect for the character, and I love her accents!

Decent start to a promising series

Where does Skinwalker rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I found Skinwalker to be pretty average. I enjoyed the story, but compared to other similar urban fantasy series, this is not my favorite. I don't feel as drawn in to the plot or characters as I have in other books.

If you’ve listened to books by Faith Hunter before, how does this one compare?

I have listened to books 1 and 2 in the Jane Yellowrock series. I liked the second one a bit better, but mostly because going into that book we already have met most of the major players and don't need as much world building or exposition. Skinwalker is a decent entrance into the Jane Yellowrock world and sets the stage well for the stories to come after.

Which scene was your favorite?

I like the interactions between Jane and Leo in this book. There is an interesting culture clash, where Jane is self sufficient and pretty modern, where as Leo, as the vampire leader of New Orleans, is used to a more archaic form of respect and standards. In general, watching how Jane navigates in the vampire world of New Orleans when their society is often at odds with her leads to snappy conversations and tension filled moments.

Fast paced, funny, interesting plot

What did you love best about Skinwalker?

Great characters with depth.

What did you like best about this story?

Heroine multifaceted and no push over.

What about Khristine Hvam’s performance did you like?

Easily identifiable voices, but not exaggerated. Real easy on the ears, even volume so you don't have to keep adjusting the volume.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

She can be whatever she wants to be - so watch your back bad guys!

Any additional comments?

Have already bought the next audiobook in the series and was very happy to see that it is the same reader.

It's fine

That's about all there is to say. The story was bogged down by being far too descriptive which slowed the pace of the story considerably while actual events would sneak up and blast past. The bulk of the content was in situational description and not plot. Otherwise, the content was original enough that, despite the unfortunate pacing, I was left completely neutral towards the book at it's conclusion. Try it if you want, or don't, it's about the same either way.

Warrior woman on the hunt!

The simple jutting words are Beasts voice. After you understand that its an awesome series. Action packed amd a lot like Laurel k. Hamilton series Amita Blake without all the sex.

Playful

Would you listen to Skinwalker again? Why?

Enjoyed the female lead. Refreshing.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Skinwalker?

The descriptions of: adding to mass to become a bigger animal and leaving mass to become a smaller one. The native American references and background.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Didn't have time to listen all in one sitting. I gave it 5 stars because I would have been sorry to have missed it.
