Men det er også en beretning om 'Det andet Rusland', som langt ude i den sibiriske taiga foldede sig ud på sine helt egne og som oftest positive bestingelser. Billedet af deportationsårene udvides fra Rachlin-familien til omverdenen. Varmt og klart belyses de mange skæbner af tragisk eller livsbekræftende art, som familien Rachlin traf på deres lange rejse.
