Publisher's Summary

Queensland, Australia, 1936

Sister Claire McAuliffe has been called from Dungarvan, County Waterford, to do God’s work in Jumaaroo, Queensland. Along with four other sisters, she is charged with setting up a Catholic school for the education of the gold rush families. But life between the tropical Australian rainforest and the azure ocean is far from the spectacular paradise it seems.

Sister Claire finds life challenging in more ways than she can count - the heat, the terrifying creatures that lurk in every nook and cranny, the crocodiles and snakes - but far more worrying is the constant presence of the much-loved mayor of Jumaaroo, Joseph McGrath. Why does a person so respected give Claire such cause for concern?

Is it the cruel way he speaks about the Aboriginal people who live on the mission? A closed community run by a peculiar religious leader who seems to deeply resent the arrival of the nuns? As Claire learns of the manner in which the Bundagulgi are treated, she is forced to act, but nobody wants to upset the status quo, and a meddlesome nun suddenly is a dangerous one.

Australian Story

Once again Mrs. Grainger has a story that tells of people and life of days gone by…but of the ability to strive and learn how differences can be accepted and good will prevail. Catholic nuns leave their home and travel to Australia to provide a schooling for children away from a large city. All will enjoy this story and at the end hear how it came to be written.

Wonderful Story!

I've listened to several books by Jean Grainger and love her writing and her stories. This was my favorite so far. The writing was wonderful and so descriptive, and the story definitely was a "page turner". Siobhan Waring's narration was beautiful and brought the story to life. Very enjoyable!

Wonderful!

Wonderful, intriguing story that grabs your attention and holds it until the end. Not overly done in any way. Tastefully makes the listener think about the people she’s writing about. The narrator is impeccable. I could always tell which character was talking based on her fabulous voice acting and believable accents.

Felt like I was in Australia

I listened to the Audible version of this book and felt like I was transported to Australia. This book captures the issues which have finally come out in the open with the European attitudes towards native peoples and their cultures, not just in Australia, but in Canada, the USA, India, etc. yet it also stresses the common human experiences and how people can come together in adversity.

Wonderful Story

Australian story of what life was like for the early settlement of Irish nuns, and a fictional adventure that will keep you interested in the story from the beginning of the book.

Love stories about Australia

Liked the accent. Liked the story. Would have liked some information about the different animals. Couldn’t understand the names of the birds or animals

Adventures of some Irish nuns.

These young Irish sisters AKA nuns had no idea what was going to take place. So they went halfway around the world and boy did they end up someplace entirely different. They found different kinds of people, different colors of people, different temperatures and land terrain. Oh what an adventure they had hold onto your habits this is fun.

Must Read

Another great story by Jean. She incorporates suspense, turmoil, and the description of the beautiful countryside. As always, there is one character that you despise. This is one that I couldn't wait for his comeuppance . I always enjoy listening to Siobhan narrating. She makes the characters come to life. I also enjoyed the afterward.
