Good start of series

This was a good start of series that kept my interest.
The pacing was a tad to fast in my opinion in that I wasn't able to completely connect with the characters. The world building & characters could use more depth but overall it was a good story. The narrator was great at bringing the story to life.

Original & fast paced young adult novel!

This is just one of those books that draws you in fast! I’m not generally a young adult novel reader, so it says a lot when a YA novel can pull you in & not let go!
Siren Calls is fast paced, full of unanswered questions and an amazingly original plot!
Who doesn’t love a good twist when it comes to mermaids!
The YA feel fit really well for the storyline, but don’t let that fool you. There’s still plenty of major emotion and action to keep you on your seat!

In general, Jade has done a wonderful job with characters and setting description :) dialogue hits at just the right time to keep you engaged, and use of inner dialogue is really really well done-bringing you closer to Evie (the main!) and her actual feelings on the craziness that unfolds for her!

The narrator was super easy to follow, and enjoyable to listen to :)

Five stars all around! Can’t wait to read more !

A good YA read

This book is great for young adults. The story is engaging and has its own twists to keep you entertained. The romance is very pg as well as the language, at least compared to what I normally read. It’s a great paranormal read for those who like the lighter side. It does not resolve all the conflicts or even love interest so I am assuming there will be more. The narrator did good with voices and I loved the added sound effects she added but she seemed to read very slow. I even sped it up to 1.4 and she still sounded normal almost 100% of the time. I am interested to see how this series plays out.

An ambitious first book!

Actual rating: 3.5 stars

Siren Calls is an ambitious first book of a trilogy by Jade Frances. The story centres on a young woman called Evangeline, who finds herself born with powers beyond her understanding. Things unravel as she meets an older woman at a local shop, and she begins her training as a very potent Siren.

Written in first-person view, Siren Calls is narrated purely from Evangeline's perspective. She is fun and spunky, and I enjoyed her inner monologue. She is taken through a myriad of trials and tribulations, where one revelation is bigger than the next. There is evil darkness within Evangeline, and they must find a way to deal with it before she is lost.

Siren Calls is definitely an interesting story with its world and characters, but a few things might need to be mentioned: Evangeline's lack of knowledge is understandable, but I never got why the other characters were so reluctant to inform her of what was going on. If there was a reason given, I must have missed it. A second issue is the pace of the book: it is beyond fast-paced. So much so, I ended up struggling to connect with some of the characters, and budding relationships felt a bit forced, including the number of men Evangeline seems interested in. And I'm not sure why the men in this book were powerful, whereas the women were not (or at least not properly trained).

Note: I listened to the audiobook of Siren Calls. The narrator has a good pace and flow, but dialogue was sometimes too weak, such as during heated moments.

Enjoyable YA Paranormal story

Siren Calls, the first book in The Rise of Ares, is an excellent start to the series. Jade Frances weaved a fabulous urban/paranormal fantasy tale that wholly captured my attention. The storyline is engaging, packed with mystery, suspense, paranormal elements, and magic. The characters are well-developed, intriguing, and capable; I thoroughly enjoyed the dynamics. Hopefully, the second book will be released soon.

Michelle Shure's narration was excellent, capturing the nuances of the characters' personalities and the intensity of the plot. All in all, this was an entertaining and enjoyable audiobook and definitely worth the listen.

Great start to the series

I was given this review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
Evangeline had suffered nightmares for as long as she could remember . When she left the children’s home she was given a box left to her by her mother so she decided to start looking into where she came from but what she found wasn’t at all what she had bargained for. Enjoyed the story and the characters were great the narration by Michelle Shure was perfect and i am eagerly awaiting book 2.
